    “Aghhhhhhhh….” Bette screamed.

Tina opened her eyes, the sound alerting her, she looked around. She gave herself a mere moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness that was surrounding her.  Bette was gone.

Bette stood stock still, the feelings invading her body paralysing her.

Tina moved quickly and quietly from the bed, listening intently, her heart was beating furiously, silence surrounded her as she tip toed through the doorway, she glanced past the door frame in both directions, her mouth became dry as the fear set in, the scream had been intense, but now there was silence.

Bette’s eye remained wide, the pounding in her chest was reverberating throughout her, her ears were ringing, her mouth was dry, her chest rising and falling as she tried to stabilise her breathing.

Tina’s eyes scanned the hallway, her eyes looking for some shred of evidence of the scream she heard echoing throughout their home. She wasn’t sure whether she should call out or not, not wanting to alert anyone or anything to her presence, but her heart was pounding more furiously as her mind swirled with thoughts of her partner and the scream she heard.

    “T…” Bette whimpered.

Tina looked around, she heard the faintest noise, the frightened voice of the woman she adored.

    “Bette…?” she whispered in reply.

Bette stood, her feet remained rooted to the spot, her heartbeat had slowed, but the loud pounding remained, the low thump… thump… thump… in her chest.

Tina glanced around, trying to make out where the sound came from when she saw a creak of light, she slowly stepped forward, her mind telling her she should rush, find out what was happening, but her heart telling her to take her time, not to upset an already potential catalytic situation.

She placed her hand on the door handle, slowly turning, trying hard not to make any noise, the creak of light got bigger, she slowly pushed the door open, her eyes adjusting to the light, she brought her hand to her mouth covering the silent gasp as her eyes rested on her partner.

    “Bette…”

Bette swung around at the recognition of her name, her wide eyes startling Tina to her core, she rushed forward, throwing herself into Tina’s arms, her arms wrapping around her as the finality of the situation hit her.

“Oh my god, Bette… what’s happened, are you okay, tell me babe…” the words rushed out as she found her arms full of Bette in such a state of panic that it knocked her back against the door.

    “T…”

    “It’s okay babe, I’ve got you…”

    “T…”

    “Tell me babe…”

    “I can’t…” she gasped.

    “Bette, breathe…, slowly, in… out… in… out… it’s okay, whatever it is, it’s okay…”

Bette remained silent in her partner’s arms, finally feeling safe once again, as her breathing slowly began to return to normal, she rested her head against Tina’s shoulder.

Tina stroked the mass of unruly curls, placing kisses on the side of Bette’s head as she slowly brought her back to a semblance of normality.

“Are you okay now babe…?” Tina whispered into Bette’s ear.

Bette nodded into Tina’s neck, her arms remaining tight around Tina’s waist.

“Can you tell me about it now babe?”

    “Its really huge…”

    “What is babe?”

    “Spider… in… the… bath…”

Tina glanced over Bette’s shoulder to see the little eight legged creature slowly making its way back down the plug hole.

    1. Well, if the spider is silly enough to go down the drain (I thought it went “itsy, bitsy spider went UP the water spout…”), I say blast him full strength with the hot water and drown the little bastard. What a coward that Bette is. All those years in NYC on my own, I killed not just spiders but countless roaches. Maybe it’s bad for my karma, but they should have been smarter creepers. I’m sure we’ll all do better next time around the wheel.

    2. I thought it was either a spider or a mouse. Very cute. I find myself skipping over stories and searching for these. I always go back and read the other stories, but these are always fun and drama free. I look forward to more. Post again soon.

    3. I also thought it was a mouse! I think there was a lot of drama in this one! I love trying to guess; don’t think I’ve been right yet! Love all of these, Jo, but I also hope you can get back to “Remember When?” soon!

    4. I was thinking a spider…but I said no way is Alpha Bette afraid of an itty bitty spider. Personally, I think she would like the sound of it crunchin’..oh, yeah.

    5. how about a cold slimy SLUG? That happened to me, my cat was out early one morning and somehow one got on to his fur, which then got on my bed..so in a sound sleep I put my hand down and there is a cold slimy slug…AAAAAGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

    6. I am glad that I am not the only one to shriek at the top of my lungs when those creepy crawly things appear in the house. All I need is someone else’s shoe to hit it and run like the dickens.

    7. All I have to do is hear someone talk about a spider and my head starts turning every which way looking for one and then it feels like one is crawling on me….THANKS ALOT LADIES…NO SLEEP FOR ME TONIGHT!

    8. LOL, first I though something is scary here, why is Bette not on the bed and she is screaming and getting scary here and my heart are pounding fast and want to know what had happen to Bette and now we know is a spider that made Bette screaming a middle of a night lol. Please post soon, thanks!

    9. OMG I tottaly had a story like that a few days ago! Only it involved me, my gf, our bed and one of those little eight-legged freaks *shivershiver* Great one again Jo! You genius!

    10. ROFL!!!!!!!!! My first thought when I realized Bette wasn’t screaming in her sleep was that she saw a spider. I hate the damn things too! Ugh now my skin is crawling. :(

    11. Guessed it — actually the lad i work with is terrified of them and had a fit last month when a dandelion clock blew in the open window and landed on his desk. as for all you others — cluck cluck

    12. LMAO!!! Yeah, been there… but no spider, cockroaches! I’m with Zulu! Don’t we all wish we had a Tina around! I thought Bette’s scream was due to finding a dreadful-looking Alice waking up on their couch, after one of those nights… Thanks!

    13. One time I put a platic sider on my sons Mailbox.Post asked me one day if he was out of town. His mail hadnt been picked up in over a week, So some people hates them and some just leaves them alone. Love that Bette was a screamer out of the bed. that was funny thanks
