Some kind of wonderful- chapter 4
Bette drained her beer and put the empty glass down decisively
“I have nowhere else to be today – I just want to talk to you and see what you have to say and swap stories and get to know you again – what about you ?”
Tina finished her beer in one long drink – that was one skill she had learnt at Harvard.
“That sounds right – same again ?”
“Yeah – see if they have a food menu – we might need it “
Tina stood up and looked at Bette
“It is so good to see you Bette Porter “
Tina stood at the bar and waited for the barman to fill up their glasses again. She turned and looked at Bette – again how was it possible that she was actually hotter than she was as an 18 year old ? How was it possible ? – but possible it was. Tina knew – she had known right from the first second she had laid her eyes on the brunette that nothing had died as far as her passion for Bette Porter was concerned. Put it simply Bette Porter remained the hottest woman Tina had ever laid eyes on and if there was the slightest chance that this reunion could end up in bed – well that was where Tina wanted it. After that – well she would take her chances.
When she returned to her seat she handed Bette the lunch menu
“You hungry ?” Bette asked
“Yes – I couldn’t hold any food down today – what about you ?”
“I went for breakfast after my run – I found I was ravenous. I ate too much but that’s one of the reasons I run – so I can eat as much junk as the mood takes me”
“I don’t imagine that goes down well with Rosemary “
“I don’t live at home “ Bette said
Tina looked up from her beer “ Really ?”
Bette sighed “ After what happened between us I took it out on both of my parents. Wrongly of course but I needed someone to blame other than myself. So I didn’t go home as often as I could have. Things have improved in the last 18 months or so – dad hasn’t been well and it brought me to my silly, selfish senses. I see them more than I did but when I got the offer from NYPD – I knew that I didn’t want to move back in with my parents. They understood and I think that’s helped us start to have a more mature relationship”
“So where do you live ?”
“My grandfather died about 12 months ago. When the house was sold and all the bills settled I got most of the money from the house. I guess it was his snub towards my father – give all the money to me not dad. I don’t think dad would have took anything from him – you know how he has always resented his old man. Well the money went to me so I bought an apartment”
“Wow – that’s awesome – where is it ?”
“Morningside Heights – about ten minutes from Columbia – that’s were I am studying from October so it makes sense “
Tina’s immediate thoughts were that if Bette had her own place that would certainly make things a lot easier if they wanted to end the day in bed. Just the thought made her shudder with the thrill of the idea.
“So you live on junk food ?”
“No – I eat more than I should but I can cook as you know. There is just not always the time”
“I still cook the recipes you taught me “ Tina said smiling. There had been times when cooking a recipe that Bette had patiently taught her was one of the few things that made the blonde happy. Those had been great days when they would hang out in her parents apartment – making love until they were both exhausted then Bette would drag her into the kitchen and out of a few simple ingredients she would cook some wonderful meal.
“Did you move back with your mom’s ?” Bette asked – this could be dangerous ground. If there was one person that Bette blamed more than any one else for their forced separation it was Emma Kennard
“Yes – I wish I hadn’t – I should have moved in with dad”
“How is he ?”
“He is great – he is taking severance at his law firm – he is finally opening his own restaurant “
“Oh that is so cool “
“He is like a kid at Christmas – its great to see him so happy and excited “
Tina wasn’t going to mention Emma unless Bette did – it was a sore subject and she didn’t want to reveal to Bette just how hurtful her mother’s words had been. And unlike Bette – Tina hadn’t had the option of buying her own place yet.
Bette looked at the menu – burger and chips sounded like a pretty good option to her. She looked at Tina who was watching her with a smile on her face.
“What ?”
“There is so much I want to ask you and to tell you – I really don’t know where to start”
Bette put the menu down and regarded the blonde – this was the blonde that had started her four year study into what seemed like every blonde lesbian at Yale – something that had been an extensive and detailed study. But while they had all been fun and sexy and cute and all those things – they had all lacked one crucial ingredient – they hadn’t been Tina Kennard.
“I meant what I said earlier – I am going nowhere “
