Someone to Watch over Me – 3

On Monday, Tina approached Bette’s office door with an inordinate amount of nervousness after schmoozing with the administrative assistant for half an hour to find out when Bette’s office hours were.  She raised her hand and gave the door three sharp knocks, hearing Bette’s faint “Come in” from somewhere behind the wood barrier.  She slowly, cautiously almost, opened the door, a borderline goofy grin plastered on her face.  As Bette looked up from the stack of exams she was grading, she too began to beam.

“Well, hello, stranger!  To what do I owe this most distinct pleasure?”

“Well, I know your office hours end in about twenty minutes, and I was wondering if you’d like to accompany me on a little lunch excursion.”

“I’d love it.  I’d love it so much that I say we leave now, and to the devil with those twenty minutes.”

                “Really?”

                “Yeah.  Let’s go.”

They sat for hours talking at a cozy corner table at the Planet.  Whatever Tina hadn’t learned the other night, she learned now, listening intently as Bette animatedly related stories of her childhood and growing up.  They swapped stories about bad first dates and their friends’ famous fix-ups.  The few times silence developed, it was comfortable, and neither felt the need to rush to fill the void.  As darkness began to fall, they finally said their goodbyes, but not until they agreed to meet for coffee the next day.

It became a ritual for them; they had lunch or coffee together nearly everyday and soon were almost inseparable.  The talk was easy, the companionship priceless.  Soon Bette was indispensable to Tina, and it frightened her a little.  Try as she might to convince herself that they were just great friends, Tina couldn’t help but feel there was more there.  She knew she felt it and had since that first night,

Perhaps it was wishful thinking, but she thought she saw more than friendship in Bette’ eyes, felt more than it in her gentle guiding touches as they walked.  Her hugs before each weekend bordered more on embraces of the full-body sort.  They bumped too often when they walked, sat too close when they talked.  Tina reveled in every second of it, but she couldn’t help but feel guilty at taking a deeper pleasure out of the friendship and guilt was not an emotion she was accustomed to feeling.  Ever.

She had no choice but to ignore it, though, and she preferred to try rather than the alternative of ending the friendship.  She knew that doing without Bette was not an option.  She knew she cared for Bette deeply, but it wasn’t until one brisk morning when she was out with Yankee, she realized the whole truth: Tina Kennard had found love.

    1. This is my day to finally catch up on my reading and I am so very glad that I found yours NY. As some have said haven’t we all been there and yes wouldn’t it be nice for it to work out for once. Thanks and can’t wait for your next chapter.

    2. NY in the house! What an excellent job. Great and clean writing style. It actually is quite compelling. PPS. They have a wonderful friendship developing.

    3. Hey, NY… this is just getting better and better. Ah, haven’t we all been there…? falling in love with a friend – difficult stuff. Keep posting…. Thanks!

    4. What milly4 said. Don’t worry about biding your time. Hell look at me. I still owe everyone one more chapter of a story plus ummmmmmm…the next chapter of another (and it’s been forever since I updated those 2).

    5. I’m with anker… Haven’t we all been there?… And what a wonder it would be to see it work out for once… ;) Great story NYGL, please more soon!

    6. I like knowing this is going to be posted daily until the story has been told. I actually would rather have a little bit every day – even a shorter chapter such as this one surely was – than unknown days between posts with longer chapters. You have a crisp clean writing style, and I echo the sentiments of other commenters…why oh why did you hesitate in posting? I look forward to this and much more from you.

    7. I have found love too…and it’s this story. It’s so nice and refreshing the friendship that could be oh so much more. The getting to know one another the realizing that they need to be around each other more and more. I need another post…and a longer post. Once I have latched onto a story I get addicted and I need frequent posts…ask the other authors I can be like a hound dog…lol (and yes Lamentamini needs to update her stories)

    8. I can’t imagine anyone who has not met their soul mate yet not feeling a sense of yearning when they read this…to also have that one person who is indespensible to them. Thank you
