    Starting Over

Bette woke to the sound of her alarm clock. Rolling over she stretched and groaned feeling like she had not had enough sleep but knowing she had to get moving anyway. Today was the end of her 90 day probationary period as VP of finance. This job like any other Bette worked in the past she gave 100% too.

Although it did not pay as well as owning your own gallery, or Director of the CAC it paid the bills. It allowed her to rent a small one bedroom apartment and purchase a modest automobile for transportation around town and to and from work.

On the weekends she either went to the park or sat around her apartment. A social life was non existent. First of all now that she no longer drank she did not feel like going out to a club or bar. Secondly she knew no one in this town.

To make sure that she never ran into Tina she elected to shop at a supermarket way on the other side of town and only through the week.

Some days she would drive to Tina’s neighborhood and park a few blocks down the street in hopes she would catch a glimpse of her driving by on her way home but as of yet she had not been so lucky.

Tired of waiting for chance to intervene she decided to take matters in to her own hands. This evening after work she would stop by the sporting goods store and buy a pair of binoculars. This way she could look for Tina from a safe distance away.

As she peered through the binoculars she saw Tina’s Honda pull into the driveway. Exiting the car she walked to the front door. Just as she got to the steps a child ran out and threw her arms around Tina’s waist. Bette watched as Tina put down her briefcase and gathered the child up in her arms for a hug.

Kissing the child’s forehead she picked up her briefcase and entered the house.

Bette noticed how happy Tina looked when she had cradled the child in her arms. The child must belong to Tina’s young partner although she looked nothing like the lady who had answered the door. But it was obvious Tina loved the child deeply.
