    Strictly Roommates – Chapter 6

    Previously:

    Bette:  So things with Abby…?

Tina:  Didn’t work out.  What I felt for her wasn’t love either.  It was more of a… Chopin-esque awakening, I guess.  I hate that it took an affair for me to realize who I am, but I can’t regret it.  What would have happened if I never met Abby, and walked down that aisle?  I can’t even bear to think about it.

Bette:  So don’t.  The fact is, you did meet Abby, and you didn’t get married.  And now you’re living in one of the gayest cities in the country.  She reached over and patted Tina’s hand, which, she noted, was the softest hand she’d ever felt.  You’ve arrived, she smiled.

Tina leaned her back on the lounger and looked over at her new roommate.

Tina:  Yeah, I guess I have.

    ###

The conversation with Tina had left Bette with a lot to think about.  Her heart went out to this woman, who had only recently come to terms with her sexuality.  As a lesbian, Bette knew how difficult that initial period could be – discovering yourself, living honestly and openly for the first time.  She vowed to help Tina in whatever way she could.

In the room next to hers, Tina laid in bed staring at her new ceiling.  She felt an enormous amount of relief, having talked for the first time about her recent past.  As hesitant as she sometimes felt about starting over in a new city, she also felt free.  Everyone she met from here on out would be new to her.  She’d have a new job.  She could leave her old life behind; the one where she had no family left, and an ex-fiance who she couldn’t love despite wanting to, and a mistress who left her feeling unfulfilled in all ways but sexually.  She had nothing to anchor her back to those places.  She had cut the cord, and she felt immensely lighter.

It absolutely did not hurt, Tina knew, that her new roommate was a very stunning, very capable woman.  But Tina knew better than to take advantage of the hospitality she had received from Bette.  She finally felt at home in a place; there was no way she was willing to jeopardize that.

    1. This is a lovely new B&T begining, even if they just stay friends it will still be good. I hope though they start slowly to be a whole lot more than just roommates. PPS

    2. Its a shame Tina doesn’t want to go to the planet, but i hope she will go when she’s more used to her new home, her new friend, and maybe her new lover, hehe :)

    3. Oh, this looks like the start of something great. Every interaction seems to be building to something more… This is a great story. And I like the shift the writing’s taken as well. Bette tiptoeing across hot asphalt is the kind of attention to detail I like to see. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

    4. this feels like the start of a beautiful friendship. no pretense or expectations then…… I look forward to see how you proceed. excellent start so far.
