The Absence of One chapter 24
“I don’t know.”
Ignoring the jealousy within her, the senator grasped Bette’s hand. “It’s going to be OK, Bette. In time, your heart will tell you what to do.”
“My heart knows you’re right, but my mind is telling me I should kiss you right now.” To demonstrate, Bette moved closer to Barbara, stopping inches away from the woman.
“What’s stopping you?” Barbara whimpered as she watched Bette slowly dragged the tip of her tongue along her lower lip.
At the very last moment, Bette pulled away minutely. “Because kissing you right now would complicate things and ruin what we have begun.”
“A beautiful friendship?” Barbara sat back, hoping to break the tension.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that,” she smiled sadly; her heart was torn. She was attracted to Barbara, that much was certain.
“You’re not as sorry as I am for it not happening.”
Bette looked away, drawing a deep breath to calm her nerves. “Every time I fix something, something else comes up.”
The senator waited patiently for Bette to continue. She knew it was important for her to voice out her thoughts.
“Things just seem to pop up at every corner, you know?” Absentmindedly, Bette began a slow caress of the hand in her grasp. “Everyone, everything just seems to require my attention.”
“That’s what assistants are for, Bette,” Barbara said.
“I know, and James has been so good for me,” she smiled at the mention of the man. “I’m glad he accepted my offer.”
“Once you’ve worked with the best, everything else pales in comparison.”
Bette looked down at their joined hands, studying its contours in detail. In a soft voice, she added, “Sometimes the best isn’t enough.”
“It is for me,” Barbara replied. “You are more than enough for me.”
She watched Barbara intently, wishing she had the same courage to reach out. “And so are you.”
“Why do I hear a but coming on?”
“Because you deserve better.”
“What’s better than the best?” Barbara wondered the extent the hurt Tina had caused.
“I’m not the best, Barbara,” Bette’s painful words alerted the woman.

argh. this is good. but the senator must go.
Hot damn. I have a thing for Bette with The Senator. I was disappointed that never came to fruition but if TiBette get back together on TLW then I’ll be a happy camper.
Please say Yes Bette!!! I am so with susannah on this. PPVS
I always felt cheated that the Bette/Barbara attraction was never consummated on the show. If it happens here, I have no objections to say the least. After all, some action with the senator needn’t rule out a Tibette reunion if that’s where you ultimately choose to go. May the best woman win!
Ok, I’m totally caught up, and I am so frustrated that I didn’t get to click ‘Next Post’ again! Gr. Anyway, I’m really torn. I have to admit, I really like Bette and Barbara, and I did when they were on the show… and was frustrated when nothing happened. But… but… it’s TIBETTE! Hm, maybe Barbara and then TiBette. I like that idea. :D
Just want Tibette here!
I’m surprised that Barbara wants to hang around on the periphery, waiting for scraps, but maybe she’s just saying what she thinks Bette needs to hear. Bette’s going to have to start opening up to Tina as well… letting Tina back in doesn’t necessarily mean that she’ll get hurt. Thanks for the update, sky.
The senator is hot, but Tibette is way hotter. Bette needs to make up her mind and gives herself and Tina a chance to find happiness again. PPS
hey sky!!! Good story and glad it is not shaping up to be a tibette fic. Tina has hurt Bette enough…she needs to be with someone who cares for her and TINA IS NOT IT!!! If people don’t like a Bette and Barbara fic, don’t need to read it!! Post very very very very very sooooooooooooooooooooon sky d!!!
Good=bye Barbara
no tibette here..NO.TIBETTE. HERE.
I LOVE this story sky… Fabulous. x
