The Absence of One chapter 33

“And what question would that be?” Bette mentally calculated how long Alice’s patience could hold up.

Alice’s eyes sparkled with mischief. She knew she was being played, but she didn’t care. Subterfuge was out of the window. “Are you on the market again?”

    “No.”

The answer came too fast. She switched tactics. “Did you spend the weekend with someone?”

“Yes,” Bette swore she saw a mini explosion in Alice’s eyes as soon as the word left her mouth.

She did a double take at the unexpected answer. “Who?”

“That’s something I’m not telling you,” Bette smirked when she heard Alice mutter. “You’re the journalist, you work it out!”

“Are you torturing Alice again, Bette?” Kit appeared with their food and sat down at the table.

“Only because she asked for it,” Bette refrained from sticking her tongue out at the blonde. Instead, her smirk turned into a full-blown grin.

“Your sister is an evil, evil person, capable of unspoken horror.”

Kit burst out laughing. “Whatever it is you want to ask, just try harder.”

She huffed. “Easier said than done. Did you know that Bette spent the weekend with someone? The weekend! And she’s not sharing the details.”

The older Porter eyed her sibling. She wasn’t sure if the mystery woman was Barbara Grisham, but she knew Bette’s weekend companion most certainly was not Tina.

Alice waited for an answer, watching the sisters trade unspoken messages. She sighed, “Of course. Kit gets all the details while the best friend gets nothing.”

“Sorry, girl, this is one exclusive you aint getting from me,” Kit patted her knee for good measure.

“You, Shane and the whole damn free world,” Alice pouted. “Maybe I’ll work on Porter 2.0.”

They shook their heads in silent laughter. Trust Alice to pull out all the stops. “You do that, Alice.”

“Beeeeeeeette,” Alice drew out her name evenly. “Can’t you at least give me a clue?”

Instead of replying, Bette started on her food. The thought of being able to enjoy Sunday brunch with Barbara and her friends at the Planet brought a smile to her face. Perhaps one day soon.

“Hey, what’s on your schedule next week?” Alice tabled her inquisition for now.

    1. Bette, do you or don’t you? Will you or won’t you? Do you want Barbara or Tina? Don’t play with Barbara and tell Tina you’re moving on, if that’s not what you really want, woman. Decide! Great to see you back, skydiver, post when you can. Thanks
