The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 2)

The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 2)

    PART FOUR: NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 2

After a while I got up from my desk, went into the bathroom, washed my face and wiped it with a towel. Then I went into the kitchen, turned on the light and got a bottle of Chardonnay out of the refrigerator. After pouring a tea glass full, I went into the living room and sat in the dark, drinking slowly, chain smoking and wondering – what to do.

I knew it would take Bette at least an hour to get back to Venice but would she go straight home? Maybe there was someone else in her life too. How would I feel if I found out unexpectedly that there was?

I blanched at the thought and yet, we were not bound. We had made no promises.

I analyzed it from another point of view. If I had told her about Howie earlier, like after we got back from Mammoth or while we were up in Mendocino, she might not have gotten so upset when we saw him in my house. We were both surprised that he was there but she would have known by then that I was going to phase him out of my life and maybe she would not have run away. I felt so ashamed of not being upfront about it, of not telling her the truth.

I got up a few times and paced. I looked out the window as if I expected to see the Corvette parked in front of the house. I walked over to my suit case, grabbed the handle, rolled it to my bedroom and unpacked it, including my briefcase with my Mendocino notes..

I took the paper work into the other bedroom and sat at my desk again. I glanced up at the Mammoth spread, as before, at beautiful Bette and handsome Terry. Would I ever see her again?

I glanced at the telephone on my desk. I intended to call her but was it too soon?

I drank and smoked my way through another half hour and then dialed her number. It rang three times and then her recording kicked in, with her warm, friendly greeting, “Hi, this is Bette Porter. Please leave a message and I’ll call you back.”

    1. Your despair is palpable but you should have kicked Howie to the curb. Bette obviously cares as much for you as you do her. She is very territorial and failed “shares with others”. PPS.

    2. Sis, so sorry I haven’t been around…been a little under the wheather…You know I love this story and can’t pretend I don’t like reading chaps. bsck to back…Thanks…You’re the best…Still trying to get the word out.*wink*Pps.

    3. artgirl, Thanks for being here and commenting. Bette is indeed playing “hardball” as you put it but we both know she has some softspots – forthcoming.

    4. Azmama, Sissee had no reason to “kick Howie to the curb” , as you put it, prior to Mendocino but she will be dealing with it soon. Just remember, as was explained, they have a trip planned to Wisconsin.

    5. Ann, Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it. You are close, not exactly the pier but you understand why a writer adds those little hints.
