The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 1, Chapter 7)
    PART ONE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 7

Howie let me in as soon as I approached the front door.

He had obviously just gotten home from work. His sports jacket was off and he was still in his white dress shirt and tie with his shoulder holster on.

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “What about Charlie?”

I walked past him, through the entry way with the living room to the right and into the kitchen, saying, “We have a problem.”

“What happened?” he asked, trailing me.

“I’m sorry to say this but I think Charlie’s into drugs.” I turned to face him.

“Come on……..” he said with disbelief. “Where‘d you get that idea?“

He went to the kitchen counter where I saw he had a Scotch and water poured. As he picked it up, I went into the dining room and turned toward him again.

“I just got through talking to Paul,” I told him.

“That airhead!” He raised his glass and asked, “Want one?”

    I shook my head no.

“What did he say?” he asked, walking toward me.

Howie seemed to have aged with streaks of gray in his hair. He also might have gained some weight. It had been months since I saw him last.

    “Paul says he’s doing cocaine.”

“Bullshit!“ he exclaimed. “And you believe him?”

“I believe him Howie. Paul’s been snitching on Charlie for years, I just never told anybody. I always took it with a grain of salt because it was all petty stuff, and I’d let it go or approach Charlie about it in my own way. But this is nothing to let go. We’ve got to confront him about it.”

He gestured toward the family room. I went to sit down on the sofa and put my purse on the coffee table while he sat in his favorite recliner. He took a long drink and held his glass in both hands, staring contemplatively into it, digesting what he had just heard.

“Fuck,“ he said. “My head is……I’m sitting here trying to think…trying to think if there were any signs but fuck, I’ve really been busy lately. I’ve been gone a lot, working this serial burglary case and when I do get home I just go straight to bed. Like tonight. I‘m bone tired and was ready to have a drink and crash.”

    1. Heartbreaking. I can understand Howie not realizing what’s been going on. He’s like a little lost boy himself. And why hasn’t Bette called? I know you said she had a good reason, but I’m dying to know. Thanks Sis.

    2. Jp22, Hey! Another new name. It just makes me so happy to see more people coming to the surface. It makes this labor of love so worth it. You wonder what Howie and Sissee are going to do about Charlie. Stop and think yourself, what you would do. A family crises. Yes, you would do everything you possibly can. Even break the law if you have to, to protect your own kid.

    3. Kbergin47, I swear, you have got to be my most avid reader. You’ve been with me since the beginning chapters, always here; always ready with worthy comments. You have no idea how much I appreciate your continued loyalty. You’re right about Howie missing all the clues to Charlie’s apparent addiction and him being kind of lost himself. As for our missing Bette, well you will soon see where she has been. Thank you very much.

    4. This chapter is about Howie and Sissee working together, trying out to find out the solution for their son Charlie’s drug problem, this is definitely a tough act for any parents, not to mention Howie is a law enforcement officer and he will face tougher dilemma to deal with this. Well, all in all, I miss Bette Porter in this chapter, so I want the next chapter fix real soon ! :)
