    The Black Flag Ch.12

    Chapter 12

The sun had just started to set the sky ablaze with many shades of red and orange as it made it’s decent from the heavens and the large vessel that sat on the beach on it’s near side cast a long shadow across the beach.

The Robin looked nearly monstrous out of the water when it’s whole size was truly exposed, along with the many growths that seemed to inhabit the ships underbelly. Even the bright red keel didn’t look nearly as impressive out of the water where you could see the peeling paint along the damaged wood. The ships carpenter was still at work, earning his keep as he scratched away with a heavy motions to rid the barnacles from the hull.

The pirates were chewing on small portions of salted pork without interest while they waited to see if Victor or Diego would be able to catch a sea turtle for their meal. The two pirates had waded out into the sea nearly a half hour earlier in search of tender turtle meat.

Shane sat and stretched out her bare feet in front of the fire that the pirates had started earlier in the day, examining her toes and stretching them out as if trying to see what they were all about. All their work was done and she had nothing better to do than stare at her own toes. Or at least that’s what she told herself.

Shane took a small bite of her salted pork and sighed, she’d been so sick of salted pork. It was one of the few provisions that didn’t go bad fast and their hold was full of the stuff. She’d give just about anything for a large decent meal. Her stomach growled at her but the thought of putting one more bit into her mouth made her gag slightly.

“Are you going to eat that?” Carmen asked pointing to the piece of meat in Shane’s hand as she finished swallowing her own piece.

Carmen had returned about an hour before, cleaned and with her hair still damp from spending hours under her personal waterfall and the fact that Shane knew the reason her hair was wet, made her just a little bit uneasy. From the very minute she’d turned and left Carmen in her secret paradise, she had constantly debated with herself whether or not to go back. She had turned back in the direction of the water fall more times than she could count on one hand but every time she’d start getting close she’d start thinking of Carmen’s reaction to her spying on her. While she might not have known Carmen for very long, she knew her well enough to know that she’d not be pleased with the pirate.
