The First Time (4)
Story written on May 20, 2012 by lez-girlz.
Bette grabbed her shoes and her keys, and shut the lights off in the gallery. "Come, you can follow behind me. I promise I’ll drive slow." She winked as she gestured toward the door with her keys.
Tina stood idly while Bette locked the glass doors. "It’s not far, just follow me and you’ll be fine!"
Bette walked over to her sleek black Mercedes. As she opened the door, she called out, "See you in ten!" and waved.
Tina got into her car and pulled out, following in the wake of Bette’s taillights. She signalled left out of the parking lot, and Tina did as well. It was a short drive to Bette’s home, but even during that short drive, Tina could feel the class of the neighbourhood change. This was significantly more upscale than she was used to. They were about halfway down a residential road, when Bette signalled toward one of the driveways on the right. Tina pulled in and parked behind her, and got out of her car.
Bette was waiting at the foot of the walkway for her. "Sorry it’s dark–I always forget to turn the porch light on." She wrapped her arm around Tina’s and guided her up the path, and then up the steps of the porch. There was a jingling of keys and the crunch of the key turning in the lock. Bette’s hand swiped around against the wall, and a light flickered on inside.
"After you," she said as she gestured through the door.
Tina stepped inside and stood near the door and Bette switched on more lights and shut the door.
"Okay, let me just show you some other pieces that I really love, and then I’ll show you the Kiki Smith." She guided her into the living room and showed her to a set of shelves that had various pieces of artwork displayed. She named all the pieces and the corresponding artists, and Tina’s eye drifted off to the books and other things stored on the shelf. They were mostly art books, but Tina examined them and fingered the spines. Some of them were old, and some brand new and shiny in the covers.
"You don’t have any family pictures." Tina noted.
