The Journey to You – Chapter 8

    Chapter 8

    Day2. California University. West Hollywood

Tina put her hand on Bette’s shoulder, gently pushing her back before their lips made contact. Without thinking about it, Tina stepped closer, keeping herself close to the brunette. Bette closed her eyes, felt her throat constrict and the sting of tears piercing her eye lids. Tina took in the sight of Bette’s anguish, matching her own, she moved forward and leaned her forehead on Bette’s, wanting to be near, but not sure if she could resist if she was looking at her beautiful face. Her words came out in a breathy whisper. Bette would not have heard her had their heads not been touching.

    "I’m sorry Bette, I can’t. Sam and Alice, I just can’t"

    "I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have."

"No, it’s not that I don’t want to, you know I want to."

Both women opened their eyes and tilted their heads back so they could see each other once more. All Bette could do was nod as she watched a cascade of emotions wash over Tina’s face.

"I’m sorry, Tina. I know. I told myself I wasn’t going to let this happen either. Not until. Well, until Alice and me…” Bette trailed off

"Are you going to break up with her?" Tina’s voice was louder now, urgent, reaching. Her hand tightened around Bette’s.

Bette looked down at their intertwined hands once more, admiring how they fit, how they matched, how they belonged.

"Yes" Bette whispered, still looking down, unable to look Tina in the eye.

"But I was thinking about that even before…" Bette trailed off again, not sure how to finish that sentence.

Tina pulled away from Bette’s touch, turning her back on the brunette and taking a few steps away.

“Tina? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for… please don’t… I mean.” Bette closed her eyes and attempted to calm herself.

Look, let’s go get some lunch ok, we have to be back in an hour to meet Phyllis and I know that meeting is really important so let’s deal with that ok?”

Tina was not responding to Bette. It was almost as if she had not heard her. Bette wanted to reach out and touch her, but she knew this would not help right now

    1. Whoo-ee!!! (fanning myself) I think Bette and Tina may need to figure this out before the fire consumes them. I am glad Tina didn’t let Bette walk away.
