I stop and look at the staff. I can see that Alice is upset – Shane may have been making her life hell but the three of us go so far back that’s its going to be odd to get used to a West Wing that does not have Shane ambling around it. She is such a part of my political life – but time brings changes and this change is one that has to have happened. I cannot see Shane falling apart because of this job – her personal life is much more important. If she never comes back but she gets her relationship back with Carmen I will consider it to be a deal worth doing. Would I give it all up to save my marriage to Tina ? No question – I know I would. But looking at Shane and Carmen’s relationship falling apart makes me realise just what an amazing a thing I share with my wife. Tina is wonderful and I know how lucky I am.

I think about what Shane said about preferring to be thought of as the bad guy rather than someone to be felt sorry for.
“That is between Shane and myself”
“The press will want to know “ Henry points out
“I know “
“The press tend to dig until they find out what they want to know “
“I am married to a former journalist and Press Secretary – I know how it works Henry. But you are right – work with Alice and Dana – get a form of words together. Plan what questions we are going to get “
“Is Shane going to make a statement – are we going to publish her letter of resignation ?”
“There is no letter of resignation. I have put her long term gardening leave if you like. Spin that which ever way you see fit. Alice- as Director of Communications I want to see anything that you come up with “
“I spoke to your doctor “ Henry looks up
“Did he tell you what a clumsy klutz I am ?”
“I gather that was the First Lady’s opinion “
I smile “ And my own – I tripped over a rug coming out of Ella’s room. I don’t mind that being announced
“You think it will distract the press ? “ Alice asks
“I don’t know “
“I was getting questions about whether you were going to release some Christmas pictures of you and the First family ?”
“Not likely “ I reply “You remember that it took a lot of work from Tina to get me to agree to the pictures of Ella, Tina and I after she was born. “
“It would go down well “ JJ points out
“I know it would- I haven’t thought about it. Does anyone have anything else to say about
having a new Chief of Staff -if you have a suggestion about how things around here could be done better lets get it out in the open. Actually if this is going to go on for a couple of hours – Alice- nip out and get some coffee arranged. Anyone hungry – I ate at 6am and frankly I am now starving again and I hate to eat alone “
In a few minutes we have agreed to send out for bacon sandwiches, someone is arranging coffee and the mood has noticeably lifted. I am still going to have to soothe some egos today but more by luck than judgement my administration might just survive Shane’s melt down. Once the meetings are over my next task is making sure that Shane survives her own meltdown.

i am always happy when i see a post from the L Wing ……wow it was harsh of President Porter not to allow Shane back as C.O.S. ….. but i love that her first priority is her family. PPMore lol :0)
Did Bette not inform Shane that she would never again be Chief of Staff so Shane could hear about it on the TV like Bette heard of Phyllis’ “resignation”? I think that in itself might push Ol’ Shane completely over the edge. Anyway, Bette needs to sharpen her focus. Ella’s great but Bette hasn’t resigned as president. She needs to do her job or leave it.
I spent a # of weeks playing catch-up w/ this story. I read @ one point that it’s one of your personal favorites so you would be continuing it…I’m thrilled that is the case, as it’s truly one of my personal favs.Looking forward to the next update!

I hadn’t thought about noone being able to get in touch with Carman, I hope Shane hasn’t snapped and taken them hostage to “keep them out of harms way and protect them” hopefully she will get some real help soon. PPS
I love any updates you make to this story. It’s always been one of my favorites. I even started reading it again from the beginning while away on business travel in New York. I think Bette has to get her alpha personality back in focus. I love how much she loves her family and how important they are, but she’s the POTUS! She has to maintain control of her staff. Way to go Bette for taking command back! PPS
The Pres. is right. Shane needs a rest, nervous breakdowns creep up on us & are not not respected by most people generally who just pooh-pooh the whole notion of ‘depression etc’; even this week when we have noro virus in our school and kids and staff extremely sick there were amateur doctors saying ‘its all in the mind’. Having had a nervous breakdown I understand its complexities and personality change? EXACTLY. The Pres. is a kind, considerate friend to Shane. When and if Shane comes back, a change of role will help rather than hinder her healing; and healing does not take place in days/weeks but months & years especially if the cause carried on over years like spousal abuse, sexual abuse, chronic illness of loved one or self. Love what U do Ally. Thx.
Lack of hope or hopelessness is part of the breakdown and the ultimate end of that is suicide. Carmen had to leave to protect her and the baby from Shane which was a wise action someone people stay and become enmeshed to the point that they cannot see the danger/illness right in front of their eyes; others live in denial & avoidance of it like they do with saying an alcoholic is really only a heavydrinker!!! Shane is toxic right now and her refusal to take B’s advice about going to the same psychiatrist as Tina did is part of Shane’s denial & avoidance!!! This is some serious shit Ally. Get Tina to contact Carmen soon. Shane could spin right out of control & take Bette’s caring action as a BIG FAT NEGATIVE, get all paranoid and become a terrorist herself. She’s already halfway there. PPS
Wow, with friends like this, Shane doesn’t need enemies. No one, including Bette, even knows what happened with Carmen or what Shane has been doing, and now people have her halfway to being a terrorist. Why aren’t her friends, her supposed family, actually moving themselves to find out what’s going on and be there for her and help her, rather than just insisting she see some therapist she doesn’t know and leaving it at that, and firing her, while everyone else talks about her?
AllyE, Love that Bette manages to get Shane to open up to her but sad to see Shane’s lack of hope for her future with Carmen and Sophie. Shane needs to decide what she really wants out of life. And if that isn’t with Carmen then she needs to with it and be the best mom to her daugther that she can be. Bette was a class act in dealing with the situation and sorting out the Senior Staff. Can’t wait to read more of the Festive break and anniversary. Brilliant entertainment. Thank you so much. Your Loyal Fan.
I think that Bette should prove her loyalty to Shane be standing by her and making sure that she gets the help that she needs. Tina needs to get in contact with Carmen and get her side of the story. Shane’s version may be a bit abcured because of her present condition. Bette is right, Shane needs her family and friends if nonething else. Shane is in SERIOUS trouble and we don’t want to lose her. PPS :o).
I like this fic because I think the premise of Bette as President kicks ass. I would love it! But I think that the job requires more of a sense of commitment and dedication than Bette seems to show, since she is running after Tina all the time, and letting Tina tell her what to do and so on, in which case she could have any regular occupation, and this would be just another tibette fic. Only you can write Bette as PRESIDENT…so can she act like one? The thing with Shane bothers me..Bette says she loves Shane but came out of that conversation not knowing anymore about WHAT is going on with Shane than she did before…not what Shane has been doing, not why Carmen left, why Carmen “refuses to see or talk to her..” and then she told Shane she is on a leave of absence, then tells Phyllis she is done permanently?
i love ur stories! i’m not gonna lie, Shane is my fav char and it kinda sux seeing her go through this, but i hope u mae it to somethin positive that turns for the best! good writing, PPS
