    The Letter ch. 26

I opened the door and she was sitting in a chair, staring into space with tears running down her cheeks. I felt like a piece of my own heart was being ripped out of my chest watching this little innocent girl, lose some of her innocence.

    “Emma?”

She didn’t move. I walked in and sat on the floor beside her chair. I didn’t have much experience with kids but it didn’t take a genius to figure out that her pain was abundant and her fears justified.

“Emma, I know that your mom and aunts want to talk to you but I thought that maybe you had some questions that I can answer as a lawyer.” She finally looked at me almost as if she just realized that I was sitting in front of her. Her tears were still falling though and my heart felt so badly for them all.

    “Why isn’t Momma stopping them?”

“Sweetie, your mother is doing everything that she can to stop this. She’s hired one of the best lawyers out there to fight for you and Alyssa. Joyce, the attorney is working really hard on this but she has to go through the courts and because of that, you and Alyssa are involved.”

    “Why?”

“The law is something that is really hard to understand but it is there to protect us. It may not feel like it but it is. When something like this comes up, a judge is the one who is not on your mother’s side or on your grandparents’ side so….” she interrupted me before I could finish.

“They aren’t my grandparents. They wouldn’t talk to Mom when she and Momma fell in love and they’ve not been here to meet me or Lyss. They don’t have the right to be called my grandparents.”

“Ok, I’m sorry. The judge is not on your mom’s side or the Warren’s side. He or she is impartial so they listen to what is presented to them by the lawyer and make a decision based on that.”

“So another person I’ve never met gets to decide whether I live with Momma.”

“Sorta but you also will have a lawyer. You’ll have someone called a Guardian ad Litem who is there only for you and Alyssa. That person will tell the judge what they think is in your best interest. If this goes to court, you will probably have to talk to a therapist, the judge and your attorney so all of them can get to know you and what you want as well as what is best for you.”

    19. So happy to see the story back. You have been sorely missed. Good to know that you were okay, just an ailing computer. Good to see Tina interacting with Emma and taking the lead to talk with Em and then the girls feeling comfortable enough to get in the bed with them when they were afraid and needed the comfort after the news was still fresh for thhem. Tina is good foer the family and they are good for Tina. PPS

    20. Welcome back NAG! We did miss this story so much! Glad that Tina is integrating herself more into Bette’s family and that Emma and Ally are allowing her to help them. The legal procedure will be hard to follow as the Warrens’ real intentions have not been clear, thus far. Hope Joyce discovers what’s behind their claim and also that she finds a way to stop their absurd demand for the custody of the girls. PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)
