The Nearness of You, Chapter 2
“God, I wish I had a camera… Not from the train. Out in the woods, in the silence so deep you can hear the leaves rustle. On a path where all that exists is you and the sound of the crunching snow beneath your feet. Somewhere so far in that the squirrels don’t run from you, and you can’t hear a trace of humanity.” Bette found herself blushing for a second time. Never has she shown that much to someone, much less a stranger.
“… I never thought you’d speak like you write.”
“Need to borrow my dictionary?” teased Bette.
“Stop.” Tina playfully hit Bette’s arm, both of them again noting the ease with which they interacted, how Tina had, somehow, slid into the seat next to Bette and now sat almost touching her. They noticed the heat that built and filled the small space between them.
“You never told me what you do,” inquire Bette with genuine interest. She’d never felt this strong of a yearning to know another person, to learn her nuances and be able to anticipate her reactions. She’d always preferred to remain alone and seek out company only when she craved it. The blonde offered a very welcome change.
“Well, I own a café. It’s not very large, sort of a local hangout, I guess. It was my mother’s, and she left it to me when she passed away a year and a half ago.”
“What did you do before then?”
“Oh,” chuckled Tina, “not much. School, actually. I moved home after I finished with my graduate degree, and my mom got sick shortly after, so things happened pretty quickly.”
“I’m sorry.”
Bette laid her hand gently on Tina’s knee as it nearly rested against her. Tina glanced down at the hand that gave away how much time its owner spent outside with its color and lines. Oddly, Tina didn’t mind that this stranger sat with her hand intimately on her knee, its warmth spreading up her leg. She again felt the peace she’s always gotten from Bette’s words, felt it growing from Bette’s lilting voice and congenial presence. In spite of herself and the distance she continually placed between her and everyone else, Tina found herself wanting to open up to Bette, wanting to tell her things, to talk until she was hoarse, maybe to cry and be comforted in Bette’s arms, as she was sure Bette would offer them. Alarmed by the speed and force of her apparent attraction to the brunette, Tina back-peddled, plunging forward with the conversation and sliding her leg from beneath her, placing her foot on the floor, removing Bette’s hand in the process. Confusion flickered in Bette’s deep brown eyes, but only for a moment.

I wish the comment box came with spell-check. It would save me much embarassment. Why are typos invisible till you hit Enter? So Tina owns The Planet? Either this is an alternate universe or a small world. Uh, please don’t turn this into a “Love Affair/An Affair to Remember” deal where one of them can’t make the date because they got crippled being hit by a cab on the way to the date (“I was looking up at the Empire State Building, it’s the nearest thing to Heaven.”). You made me very nervous when they didn’t exchange numbers. So post soon as my nerves can’t take the strain.
This is so poignant. I love it.
im sooo lovin this storyand please dont make us wait till next week.p.p.s.
they both better be at the planet for their date, i don’t want it to turn into “before sunset” or “affair to remember” when one of them can’t make it…it would be sad
Ny, another great chapter from you. Love the story and of course, our girls.
I think them riding on the train gives your story its old time feel. Just lovely. NYGL you have a real talent for this storytelling. You have an awesome sense of humor, too.
This story is very good. I love it. thanks PPS
I am mesmerized by this story. I too need a dictionary but to spell (because some how that skill did not make it into my brain wave patterns). So Tina was reading one of Bette’s books while she traveled. I can’t wait for the following Thursday when Bette walks into Tina’s Planet.
Love the story you are weaving. Can’t wait til next week. PPS don’t wait that long.
NY… as always a great update. I’m sorry I’ve taken so long to read/comment… life… love… got in the way. But I caught up and this is just… well, breathtaking really. The tension is palpable between these two… the connection astonishing. I feel like was on that train watching two strangers (although there’s a certain familiarity about their faces somehow LOL) fall in love right there in front of me. This is such a beautiful beginning, NY… can’t wait for the continuation. And hell yes, the pleasure is mine!!! Oh, and congrats on your nominations… so well deserved, my friend.
I am enjoying this story. I completely know how Bette feels…just the other day I yelled “Stop the Car!” and jumped out with my camera. Trains are much harder to stop. I hope she’ll get back ther to take the picture maybe with Tina. There is nothing more upsetting then missing the perfect picture.
Ah! Everything’s proceeding nicely thus far. Um… I’m so pleased to see a chapter, I don’t even have anything all that creative to say. Loved it, though, post the next soon. I’ll be looking for that BeLena fic… that oughta be really interesting. Thanks for the chapter, NY.
Ann is seeing it way differently than me. I’m seeing vivid colors. Tina’s knees huh? *snicker* I’ll probably skip the one-off because I can.
once again, I am so loving your writing….more soon???
A week from Thursday… I really hope your not going to keep US waiting that long!! You have me completely sucked into this story, although I think a delicate touch of the lips as a parting gesture would have had me swooning! Great writing Kettle!
Just beautiful..Thanks
Yay! this was great to wake up to, aw, I’m liking the sweet slow build up between these two, the chemistry, liking the way you’re writing this partner in crime, blame those belena chicks for delaying your next post, :)
A wonderful story in the making and great writing makes an excellent combination. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I just caught up on your story. I like it! Now, you won’t keep Tina waiting for the next thirty years, will you? Please? Post soon.
Excellent update!! I think this will turn out to be an amazing day starting it off with reading your chapter. I like when Tina catches Bette staring at her when she moves, I’d likely get caught too. Talk to you later, the stitches come out today so I can respond quicker and not take so much time typing out my e-mails back to you!
totally loving it NYGayLady, just wish u’d post more often. now u got me wondering who r the friends they got in common and how many more chapters b4 “Thursday”?
excellent story, I’m really enjoying it :)
I love this beginning….I am sitting here wth the baby trying to catch up on 5 weeks of reading and must say I have missed it. can’t wait for more
I’m absolutely loving this story. Its beautiful. I want them to have their “date.” Although you had that disclaimer I do hope you get a chance to update it soon.
Great story, Kate. Beautiful writing. You should post next chappy soon, you know that? I’ll keep bugging you to post quickly. LOL ;)
I don’t care, black & white, living color, it all works for me. Definitly different with Tina owning the planet. It may have taken you a while to get this to us, but you did a damn fine job of it.
Sorry it took me so long to read this NY, but I was otherwise occupied. Since you are a romantic at heart I know this is going to be a pleasure to read. Will be anxiously awaiting the next chapter my friend.
Good chapter and love it!
