The Newly Discovered SoCal Humminger Bette Porterius ~ Chapter 8

Just as the barista handed Bette her usual skim latte with double espresso shots, a dark haired woman spoke.

“Let me know if you enjoy that.”

Bette smiled pleasantly but impersonally at the stranger with the unidentifiable European accent.  Bette had perfectly honed the skill of politely but firmly telling strangers that their current pleasant exchange was the only one they would ever share.

    “I’ve adjusted the steamer nozzle.”

Bette’s expression switched into the more aggressive one she wore to warn strangers away.  She stopped, though.  Steamer nozzle was an unusual pick-up line.

The café’s new owner had watched the beautiful woman’s expressions with amusement.  She enjoyed the unsettling effect she had had.

“I am the new owner of The Planet and my very first change was to adjust the steamer.”

Bette saw the amusement on the other attractive woman’s face and smiled back.

“I’m Marina Ferrer,” she said as she reached her hand towards Bette.

     “Bette Porter.”

“I don’t plan on changing very much.”

    “People are creatures of habit.”

“Are you a creature of habit?”

“I come here each morning for my latte.  Large, skim, two shots.”

“Then, Bette Porter, I will consult you regularly about any changes I may make.”  Marina turned to the counter and nodded at Bette, “No charge.”

Bette placed her money on the counter and smiled at Marina, “I won’t be able to give unbiased advice if I’m not a paying customer, will I?”

Marina smiled at the interesting exchange as she watched Bette walk to the back of the café.

Bette never had to hunt for Alice since the budding journalist always sat at the same table.  As she approached, Alice looked up, dramatically moving her gaze from Bette’s hand that held her latte and Bette’s other, empty hand.

    “Morning, Alice.”

“Good morning, Bette,” Alice responded as she continue to stare at Bette’s empty hand.

Bette grew self-conscious for a moment and looked at her own empty hand.  “What?”

    “Busy this a.m.?”

“You know that I am.  What does that…”

“Ah, the Artists’ dinner’s tonight.  So, I should be understanding that you forgot something this morning.”
