The Pain of Separation- Chapter 10
Bette: Helena, to what do I owe the pleasure of your presence? (She said smiling, in order to put up a
facade.)
Tina: Nothing, she was just leaving. (She said in a hasty, dismissive manner.)
Helena: Well actually, Bette, I had come by to drop off Tinas house key, she left it on my car keys
when she returned them and in case I wasnt home when she got back, I didnt want her to be stranded
outside of the house.
Bette: Oh okay well that was very considerate of you to do so, but as long as I had anything to do with
it, Tina would never be stranded.
Helena: Aw how sweet. You obviously dont know this woman then, it was not more than a couple of
days ago that she slipped into her scatterbrained ways and went and got her car towed and had no way
of reaching anyone, and so she had to walk. You wouldnt call that being stranded?
Bette: First, Tina is far from being anything close to scatterbrained and second, I heard about that
ordeal, and it proves my point that I will emphasize to you again . . . as long as I have anything to do
with it, Tina will never be stranded. What do you think that she just walked all the way back to West
Hollywood?
Helena: Well thats what I assumed.
Bette: You didnt ask? …Figures, but if you had thought to ask, then she probably wouldve told you
that I happened to be going down that highway at the time that she was there and I offered to give her a
ride back.
Helena: Really? You wouldnt have been able to play the hero you know if I had found out about it
before you did.
Bette: From what Ive heard, she didnt get a chance to tell you because I guess that you were just too
wrapped up in work to answer your phone. Im sure that Tina would expect that type of behavior from
me, but certainly not from the all caring Helena. (She said sarcastically.)
Helena: (Laughing slightly in agreement) You said it, not me.
Bette: But isnt that what you think of me? That Im good for nothing more than providing? That Im
always too busy for Tina and that she would be making a mistake getting caught up with me again?
Tina: Bette, come on, let it go.
Bette: Tina, we might as well clear the air while were all here. Im sure that Helena has some things
that she would like to say to me that Im sure shes been wanting to say for a very long time.
Helena: Actually no, thats where youre wrong, I never needed to say anything to you because having
Tina was answer enough.
Bette: Is that so? And do you have her now?
Tina: All right! Thats enough from the both of you! What am I to you two, some kind of trophy or
prize thats awarded to the best man? You know I have to go. I cant do this right now.
Bette: T, Im sorry.
Helena: See? Look at what you did. Youve upset her . . . again.
Tina: Youre starting again Helena.
Bette: Helena can you just but out of our lives for at least two minutes? Tina dont go, please, I think
that we should really talk.
Helena: Bette, I think that you should start speaking for yourself more, what makes you think that you
and Tina share a life still, thats awfully presumptuous of you.
Tina: See Bette? Thats why I have to go now, because I know that it wont stop. Ill call you later, I
will, and dont worry, well talk soon okay?
Bette: Okay. (She agreed because she felt reassured by the tone in Tinas voice, she knew that she
meant what she said.)
Helena: Here Tina, why dont I walk you out?
Tina: No thanks, Ive walked in and out of this house for the past eight years or so, I think I know my
way out. (She turned and winked at Bette as she walked out.)
Helena: Goodness, well . . . you cant force her to do anything that she doesnt want to. So she didnt
want an escort.
Bette: Yeah, you can only manipulate her into doing what you want.
Helena: Ill let that one go.
Bette: You know, you are definitely more than welcome to follow her out.
Helena: In a hurry to get rid of me are we?
Bette: Do you prefer frankness, or should I lie to you?
Helena: Okay, enough said, I can tell when Im not wanted.
Bette: And yet you managed to stay around this long.
Helena gave Bette one final glance and walked toward the door and Bette followed close behind.
Helena reached out and opened the door and as she stood in the doorway, she turned to face Bette . . .
Helena: Well, this encounter has been wonderfully exciting Bette. I wish you a satisfying, fabulous
evening.
Bette: Thank you, Im sure that it will be.
Helena: Oh and Im really sorry that your plans with Tina fell through.
Bette: Thats okay, well reschedule.
Helena: Really, you believe so?
Bette: This is what I know. All right, I dont mean to be rude, but you have officially exhausted your
welcome and I have things that I need to tend to.
Helena: Oh yeah, Im sorry, I almost forgot . . . work work work. Ill catch you later then.
Bette quickly closed the door soon after Helena stepped out. Damn that ***** *****. It took some
real balls to come in my house, uninvited no less. Who am I kidding, thats probably why she was so
comfortable invading the situation, I bet she really does have balls hiding somewhere in there. She
thought to herself. That woman is so bloodthirsty and shes always out to cause division between
people and ***** with their lives. Bette went over to the table where Tina had left the food and sat
down. When she opened the bag, she saw that it was her favorite and she cracked a small smile and
started to dig in when the doorbell rang again. Is there no ***** peace ever?
