The Promise – Short Story
When Tina looked up to her again, Bette thought she would lose it. She had teary eyes that were begging her stay. "Go."
"You really want me to go?" Bette asked, seeing how badly Tina needed her, but also seeing that it was probably wise to create distance between them. In so many of their longer arguments as a couple, they ended up making love just as they broke down.
Tina looked down, trying to figure everything out, realizing how guilty Bette must be after seeing her emotions speaking so clearly. She didn’t hate Bette, she just didn’t know how to describe it. As she slowly looked up again, she saw Bette walking away, obviously having heded her wishes, but now she regretted her response.
Bette made her way out the door and refused to let her emotions get the better of her. She took another sip of coffee and continued on with her day.
***
If you think of me … if you miss me once in a while,
Then I’ll return to you. I’ll return
And fill that space in your heart …
"Tina," Bette continued, gathering all of her strength and looking directly into the hazel eyes she loved. "That mistake …"
"Bette-"
"It was a horrible mistake!" Bette insisted, taking both of Tina’s hands in hers and tugging on them, "T … I’ve never been so stupid in all of my life. To just go and … and …"
"Please don’t do this."
The tears were collecting in Bette’s eyes, and she couldn’t even try to blink them away. She just focused on meeting Tina’s gaze again – she needed to explain. She needed to finish. "Tina … I’ve hated myself for what I did for sooo long. For all this time, after you left me. And I don’t blame you Tina! I don’t … I could never blame you for trying to protect yourself."
Tina turned her head. She hated thinking about Bette that way; as the person who had torn her life to pieces.
"I wanted to be the one to protect you …" Bette whispered, getting a little bit closer, the look on her face of complete loss. "But I won’t lose you. I can’t … I can’t live without you. You mean everything to me."

Hi GR, That was extraordinary.I love how Bette and Tina talked things through before they make hot sexy love. The transferring between scenes brought up so some delicious and dramatic images.Bette and Tina needed this to happen before they could start on the long road to rebuild their relationship.Bette had to take ownership of her affair and prove to Tina that Tina is the only one who holds her heart.Tina had to hear this.Just perfect.More wonderful writing from a favorite author.Thank you so much for sharing.Your Loyal Fan.
