Midway through the week, Bette was running her hands through her hair at the stress of all the work that had been piled up on her desk. The only positive note being that the pile of paperwork she’d finished was tallest.
When she had pulled the phone to her ear, holding the receiver with her shoulder, she let out an exhausted sigh. She hated leaving messages.
“Bette Porter calling …” she started, focusing on the décor of her office while she inquired about an art show she’d planned that was meant for the weekend after next. There was pressure on her to keep the date, but she was calling for more time. The catering couldn’t very well arrive a week early.
After she’d hung up her phone, she let her shoulders drop, sinking onto the surface of her desk. Seven hours without a break. It was three o’clock in the afternoon.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” she mumbled when she heard the phone ring. She didn’t even want to pick up her head, but she knew the call might be important. If James had put it through, it was worth taking. She felt around her desk and picked up the receiver as she forced herself up in her chair again. “Bette Porter.”
“Is this a bad time?”
Suddenly, and without intention, Bette’s face lit up. She even smiled as she closed her eyes and dropped her head in her hands. “T … I missed you.”
“You sound so tired, baby. You okay?”
“I … I’m just …” Bette took a deep breath in and then out, giving herself time to do so – knowing Tina would wait. “Swamped. Just busy, that’s all.”
Tina sighed into the phone. “Tell me you’ve eaten.”
“T!” Bette groaned, exhausted. “Please don’t be disappointed in me right now, okay? I just …” I couldn’t take it. “I’m trying to just get everything done. I’m gonna be here late as it is. So many plans have fallen through …”
“No, I don’t think you understand,” Tina said, much gentler. “Bette, I’m just worried that you’re gonna get sick, not eating like that. I’m not disappointed in you. I’m disappointed in myself. That I haven’t been taking better care of you.”
Bette smiled again, but much weaker. “Take care of me?” she asked with some obvious embarrassment. “T …”
