The Sound Track of Our Lives

Tina had followed Bette into the kitchen. She stood in the entrance watching Bette struggle with the unruly dinner. She watched as Bette got the situation under control. Despite the undeniably large odds that Bette would mess up dinner, she seemed to be facing her foe with a calm that Tina had never seen before. Bette may be cussing but there was a starling lack of passion to it. It was almost as if Bette was cussing out of habit more then frustration. This little change gave Tina hope that today’s conversation would end well. “Would you like my help?”

“Oh no thank you, T. I think I have it under control now. It was a close one wasn’t it?” Bette pointed to the now tame water to illustration that everything was indeed under control. “I thought maybe we could eat dinner together.” Bette smiled; the distraction of the water had eased her. “Sometimes friends cook each other dinner,” Bette clarified.

Tina almost laughed at the child like innocence of the last statement. “Yes, I know. However, usually the friend doing the cooking can actually cook.” Tina frowned in mock seriousness.

Bette just shook her head, “I can cook some things!”

“Of course you can. You just gave me an excellent display of your water boil prowess.” Tina smiled sweetly. “So what are we having for dinner Chef Porter? May I be your soup chef?”

“We are having pasta with asparagus. They were out of season so I had to spend a fortune on them but it is the only healthy dish I know how to make.” Bette opening the bag of fresh pasta, pouring the noodles into the boil water, then she set the timer before turning back to Tina.

“Healthy? When did you start worrying about what you eat? Usually you just work it off. Does this have to do with me?”

“What?” Bette’s eyes grew wide, she had been caught. “No, I just thought I am getting older and it makes it harder to keep off the weight.”

“Relax Bette,” Tina smiled as she reached out to take Bette’s hand. She stopped herself, her fingers lightly brushing against the darker ones. The small contact sent a jolt of fear through Tina. Fear; how easy it would be to come back without even resolving anything. How easy it would be to say I want to come home. Knowing Bette would take her back, knowing if they rushed it that nothing would get better. No, Tina was not ready to touch Bette. She was not ready to let herself want Bette. “I know I have gained some weight. That is why I need to talk to you.”

    2. Isn’t that Bettes house,Did she just leave her own home.Just leave Tina there? That is something I would do but not Bette. That is so sad, was she thinking of the other baby,or how much Time she has missed in this. Poor both of them. Thanks

    3. Oh dear God, why couldn’t she just faint like normal people instead of doing what she does best, running. For the love of Pete, get that fool back in the house and have her embrace Tina and tell her how happy she is. Thanks for the post.

    4. VFULLART! YOU COME BACK HERE AND EXPLAIN YOURSELF! Started off edgy, things actually started to get nice and then what? What the fuck? Was the nice part imaginary? Is Bette nuts? What?

    5. Poor Bette, seems like she remembered when she and Tina were talking about names for their first son. So sad. Then she opens” her eyes and finally sees what’s in front of her. It’s sad that Bette is so self punishing. She’s so critical of herself that no one can punish her as much as she can herself. Hope Tina stays and waits for her to come back home. They need to talk. Thanks for the update.

    6. You are so so bad Valerie. See what happens when I bother you about not posting–we get another chapter. See age does have it’s wisdom. Ha! Ha! Oh yeah by the way–the chapter–I think you have upset some of your fans, but if you post again soon I’m sure all will be forgiven. Great writing as always my friend.
