Chapter 17

Bette and Tina woke up just in time to get ready and check out of the hotel. They had to taxi it back to Bettes place. When they arrived home the house was unusually quiet and as Bette went through the house looking for Shane she realised that her bed was not slept in. Bette became worried. When she attempted to call Dana she saw a note near the telephone. Spent the night at the beach with some friends.

But its almost two. Where could she be?

Whats that sweetie?

Shane, she left this note saying that she spent the night at the beach but she should have been home by now dont you think?

Oh come on, shes practically an adult now. She and Dana can take care of themselves.

Bette sighed. Although Shane was almost eighteen Bette sometimes can be very protective of Shane. I guess youre right.

Tina knew she didnt convince Bette, Why dont you relax and I will fix us something to eat. Tina got lunch started and as soon as they were about to sit and eat, Shane walked through the door and headed to her room without realising that Tine and Bette were there. Bette and Tina looked at each with an expression which meant What was that all about? Bette got up and followed Shane. Shane was already in her room with her door locked. Bette knocked and few times but Shane didnt answer. Shane? Let me in? Please? Honey whats wrong? Bette became annoyed and very concerned that Shane didnt answer. She began to pound on the door and yell. Eventually Shane opened the door but didnt and walked back to her bed without saying a word. Shane has a way of locking herself from everyone when something bothered her and it can be the hardest task to get her out of that place she hides.

Shane? Shane whats wrong? Please talk to me?

I cant. Not now. But I will tell you. I promise.

Bette waited a while before leaving the room. She didnt want to push Shane but she trusted that when Shane was ready to tell her she would. Hours past and Shane still didnt leave her room. She had fallen asleep soon after Bette left her room. It was close to seven that night before she finally came out. Bette had gone to get dinner and Tina was reading when Shane came to the living room. Hey.

Hey sleepy head. You ok?

No. Wheres Bette?

She went to get dinner.

Ok. Shane sat next to Tina on the couch but didnt say anything. Tina continued reading. She didnt think it was her place to pry and she left it up to Shane to talk whenever she was ready. After a few moments Shane finally spoke, Can I tell you something? Dana and I had a fight, but I cant tell Bette because she is going get mad with me and I dont want a lecture just want someone to talk to.

Shane hesitated a bit. She knew she could trust Tina but Tina was also Bettes girlfriend and she was hoping that Tina would keep it to herself and not tell Bette. Shane would eventually tell Bette but not now. Tina closed her book and gave her undivided attention to Shane. I did something last night. After we left you guys. Shane started, taking pauses between sentences trying to read Tinas facial expressions. We went to a rave at the beach and we were drinking and stuff. Dana and I. well we were I ummm I had ***** with Dana. But I also had ***** with two other girls.

We fought. It was really bad. I dont even remember what we said to each other. Anyway, the cops came. They took us to the station. I called Alice. She took Dana home. She didnt even look at me when she got out of the car. I went to see Nana. Thats where I was all morning. Shane let out a loud long sigh, and tears began to flow, What am I gonna do?

Tina took Shane in her arms and Shane welcomed the hug. Just then Bette walked through the door, Baby, I have din. Shane quickly pulled away from Tina and started wiping her eyes. A look of confusion came across Bettes face when she saw Shanes demeanour. Whats going on? Shane?

Nothing, we were just talking, thats all.

Sure? Bette looked at Shane with piercing eyes.

Bette left Shane and Tina and went to the kitchen to get dinner ready. Shane followed not too far behind. She watched Bette for a few minutes and decided to help Bette with setting the table. Bette?

I went to a rave on the beach last night with a bunch of kids from school. We got drunk and stuff. Come here. Bette opened her arms and embraced Shane in an effort to comfort her. Its going to be ok.

Table was set and the three women sat down to have dinner.

Shane? Shane looked up to acknowledge Bette.

Tina and I have something we would like to discuss with you.

Well, Tina got a job offer in Delano. To teach at a technical college there.

Shane looked at Bette and was amazed at how calm she was. And you are going to let her go?

Its not my decision to make. Shane was about to say something but Bette interjected before she could comment, but I had an idea and Tina agreed to it.

I asked her to move in with us. But she said only if youre ok with it.

Im cool. But just remember to turn the music up when you two are doing it. The walls are thin you know.

Bette and Tina laughed and Bette didnt let that one go without a come back, Then the music will always be loud.
