The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Eighteen

Tina nodded. "He’s a smart little boy. I’m sure he’ll be fine. I’m happy that you worked it out with Abby. I know that might not have been easy," she said, referring to Mikey’s mother.

"Surprisingly, she was very easy to talk to. I guess my moving far away from her is a blessing in her eyes. She’d do anything to get rid of me. So lunch? You got any plans for today?" he asked.

Tina sighed and once again, the guilt she felt forced a response. "Yeah. Let’s do lunch."

They agreed on a sushi bar that was not far from the studio.

When she met him there at 10 minutes to eleven, she still had not gotten a response from Bette regarding her invitation and that lack of response had her feeling a little uneasy.

Henry, dressed casually in jeans and a polo, was all smiles. They shared an awkward hug before taking seats across from each other at a small table for two.

"You…uh…you look nice," said Henry, his words haltingly and insecure.

Tina smiled as graciously as she could and responded, "Thanks. It’s okay to say I look nice. You on the other hand look really laid back. I take it you didn’t go into the office today."

"You know me well. I’m off today and heading out of town tomorrow. I’ll pick Mikey up in a little while and spend some time with him today before I leave," he said.

A waitress appeared and they placed orders for water with lemon, diet cola, and a sushi sampler combo they’d ordered and shared a few times before.

Tina sipped her water as they waited for their lunch meal to arrive. "You’re going to miss him. You adore that little boy."

"I’m going to miss the hell out of him. But…I have to move on. I’ll get to see him and spend time with him. This is a great break for my career. If I don’t take it now, there might not be another chance."

    Tina nodded. "You’re right. I know. "

    "And how’s Angie?" he asked.

    "She’s great."

Henry’s smile faded and he softly said, "I’m going to miss her, too."

    1. MTS, what beautiful writing. I felt Henry’s pain. Tina was entirely selfish but ultimately she needs to do what is best for Angie and her self. Henry was a phase that she might acceed to yet again. Maybe she is a fluid bisexual. Bette is formidable and intoxicating. A hard habit to break. Thanks for the frequent posting.

    2. Well-written, as all your chapters have been. Tina’s racking up the disillusioned ex-lovers for now… she maybe needs to take a step back and look at everything. But that’s maybe impossible for her until she resolves her feelings for Bette. And I don’t think she’s going to find a resolution until Bette’s ready to talk to her. Unfortunately for Tina (or for both of them, not sure yet), I don’t think Bette is going to be ready any time soon. Thanks for posting. :)

    3. Does Tina have so little insight that she’s shocked Bette hasn’t replied? Good grief Tina, take some time for yourself to heal, please. I’m also sad for Henry. It always sounds touching when people say they’ll wait for their ex-lovers. But really – isn’t that saying you’re willing to be second best? Everyone deserves to be someone’s #1. PPS!

    4. Well Done!!! Tina has to figure out who she is and what she really wants before tantalizing and leaving tons of emotional carnage…my vote will continue to be for B and H…PPS

    5. Thanks for the frequent posts. I can´t believe Tina is oblivious to why Bette has not answered her. She should quit chasing the images of what was once and start addressing the issues at hand. Leave Bette alone and face all the “why´s” in her current situation.

    6. I think Spumoni may have hit the nail on the head with her comment that Bette sees MELVIN in Tina and I will go further and add that it could be said of Helena as well. MTS – given your response to my question regarding the conversation between Bette and Helena in a previous chapter: “pandp: I think the connection of callousness comes because Helena’s treatment of women in some way resembles both Bette’s father’s treatment of women and his treatment of her realtionship with Tina. And Helena did make Bette’s life a living hell. However, sometimes in life, the enemy of your enemy does end up becoming your friend. Especially as circumstances and motivations change.” Regardless of how badly Bette and Tina were treated by Melvin Bette kept going back expecting a different reaction from him each time their circumstances changed ie: Tina’s pregnancy, the breakup, his illness. For me that might explain why she is still hoping for something with Helena even though she’s treating her like yesterday’s news. Bette’s sense of self-esteem and self-worth is so low (partially due to growing up with Melvin as her sole parent)that she thinks she doesn’t deserve to be treated any better. She’s desperate for the attention even if it’s from self-serving women like Helena and Tina. Bette will never measure up and they both know her vulnerability so they can use it as power over her just like Melvin did. Regardless of which one she ends up with or if she ends up with neither it’s something she will bring into every new relationship. Too sad for Bette. Hope she’ll come to see her own value someday and make decisions that are to her benefit and not everyone elses. This is a great journey into character analysis that you are taking us on. Thank you. I look forward to every new post.

    7. Wow, first I have to comment on your great story.IC never could get the depth of her characters like you have even though she had 5 years to do so. Secondly, what wonderful insights by my fellow readers. You have touched the depth of our minds. Please continue to post.

    8. Ok, I …well adore this chap!:)) WHat Henry told Tina..it’s soo true. Really have no idea where you’re going with story, now I’m very curious!!:)) Still like belena possibility but I also hope T will have to redeem for being selfish. Post soon, please!!!

    9. This Tina is so enlightening. There is always the thought that we look for some of our parents’ traits when we choose a lover. I have always thought that Bette saw something of her mother in Tina. Boy was I 180 degrees wrong. Let’s review the list of broken hearts: we have Bette and we have Henry and we have Mikey and we have Angie twice–first keeping her from her Mama B and then from Henry and Mikey. “It is human nature to pursue one’s happiness at the expense of someone else’s misery.” Melvin Porter. Jokes on me! Bette saw MELVIN in Tina!!! That “Ms. Kennard” of his was just him giving props to a fellow heartbreaker! Thanks, MTS, for another great chapter.

    10. Hey MTS, that was awesome. Henry’s confession of love totally knocked Tina for six. I think this was most useful as it help her realize her one true love is and has always been Bette.Even though they are not together they both need to work things out. Angie is the constant reminder of their love.As I’ve said before I want Tina to fight for Bette, to romance and chase her even if this is up against Helena.I think Bette needs to feel desired again.Yes, a fling with Helena would do Bette the power of good it might lay the foundation for following your first, last and forever.I am the even hopeful romantic and dream of Bette and Tina finding each other once more.Battered and stronger, more focussed on making a live together and a family for Angelica.Thank you so much for making the site a place I visit every day.You give me so much joy and entertainment.Your Loyal Fan.

    11. Wow, what a chapter. I’ll try not to be long with my comment tonight. First I Almost feel sorry for Henry but he knew what he was getting into and he knew what they did in that bedroom was entirely WRONG and he shouldn’t be beating over the head with it now. Shame on him. Tina should have left when she stood up and nt sat down to hear him whine. He knew she loved Bette with all that was in her, HE was the phase, not Bette, dear God, is the man stupid or what. He hoped with his little speech drama that Tina will change her mind and come with him. Crazy man, as they all are. Tina needs to look in the mirror and realize all the problems she has created by making rash decisions and breaking hearts. She should send Bette the most beautiful bouquet she can find or some kind of gift along with a most sincere apology stating how sorry she is for hurting her and being so damned selfish. Let Bette know that she has Tina’s heart for now and all eternity and that will never change. Tina then needs to go into counselling if necessary and I think it is to get herself together so that she can come back to Bette with a clean and open heart that belongs to Bette. She needs to face all the carnage that she has left in her selfish wake. As for Henry, she has squared herself with him whether he chooses to believe it or not. Henry is not for her, she is all Bette’s. Hopefully she will stay in contact with Bette cordially and STAY the Hell away from other people while she is trying to pull it all together. Hopefully Bette will not find anyone to replace Tina in her heart either. I still think they belong together, and hoping your story will turn out that way. As Azmama said, “Bette is intoxicating and formidable and a hard habit to break and Tina knows this already. She shouldn’t be disappointed if Bette does not respond to her invitation. She should just take it in stride and keep on doing her best to show and prove that she too is changing and regrets deeply everything she has done to hurt Bette and do everything she can possibly do to correct that. Thanks for posting such an awesome story. Each chapter leaves me anxious and eager to see the next one. Thanks again.
