The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Eleven
"Why are you doing this? Why are you so angry with me?"
Again, the dark brown eyes narrowed. "Tina, where have you been? You know what? I have to go. I can’t do this with you this morning. I’ve got a lot on my plate and none of it includes dealing with you."
"Bette – – -," Tina began, before Bette hung up the phone and the call was disconnected.
The dark-haired woman let out a frustrated sigh as she sat her phone down on her desk. Tina was nearly unmatched in her ability to unsettle her and Bette knew it was wise to disengage before she became upset.
She was standing up, preparing to go and grab a cup of coffee when her phone vibrated. Gritting her teeth, she picked up the small device and eyed the screen. A slow smile slid across her face when she realized that the source of the vibration had nothing to do with Tina Kennard.
It was a text from Helena.
Bette, is it just me or did you have a great time last night as well? I really enjoyed myself. Thank you for letting me tag along.
Bette was still smiling as slid back into her chair and her fingers raced across the keypad.
It’s not just you. I had a great time as well. I might have to bring you along to these functions more often. Leave some space open for me on your social calendar.
Bette was both giddy and nervous as she awaited Helena’s response. It was weird for her to feel this combination of emotions, especially as they were tied to her awaiting the words of her former sworn enemy. But the smile remained in place and she opened up the email on her computer as she awaited the vibrating of the phone.
It wasn’t long before the response was read by Bette’s waiting eyes.
Given my latest circumstances I should be more than available. I’m always available for my friends. Are we friends?
Bette smiled broadly as she read the words. As she quickly wrote a response, Phyllis breezed into her office.
"Good morning, Bette. Do you have a moment? Can we walk and talk?" she asked.
Bette smiled. She’d quickly come to realize that these "walk and talk" sessions were part of the chancellor’s daily ritual. The faculty member at the chancellor’s side was a rotating variable, but the walking around campus and the discussions to be had along the walks were constants that did not change.
"Good morning, Phyllis. I’ll be right there," Bette replied.
The beautiful brunette finished one last text before joining her boss.
Yes, I would consider us friends. I have to run now…boss is here. We should get together again…soon. I’ll call you when I can.

Eeeep!!! First!I’m really loving this story! A tiny part of me feels sorry for Tina but she had it coming. And please, non of Chancellor Krolls’s sapphic drama here. Thank you and goodnight!
Damn! I just read my comment and there’s one too many typos. That’s what happens when you spill milk on your keyboard.
You’re scaring me!
I really like this story. I even kinda like the idea of Bette and Helena. Bette blowing Tina off was just perfect. Tina needs to realize that there is a consequense to her action.
Bette finally grew a pair. Helena makes her happy in that more than friends kind of way. ;-)
I agree with mette and azmama, bring on the pairing of Belena.
I’ve been reading…first time commenting. PLEASE don’t have a Bette and Helena get together!! My heart is breaking for Bette AND Tina. Can they be redeemed in each other’s eyes? Please??
Just started reading…I’m a Bette/Helena fan…love this story…
interesting…bette was able to forgive helena after one in-depth conversation with her…maybe she should do the same with tina, they both made mistakes but it’s like bette punishing tina…
Loving your story MTS though i too am holding out for a bette and Tina pairing but good things come to those who wait i’m thinking! Bette is obviously still raw where Tina’s concerned and can’t really trust what she says and that’s got to be earned back…which i seriously hope Tina manages to do!! Don’t mind Bette and Helena as friends at all, yup, bring it on but please let T be the only one who ends up in her bed!! pps
Hey MTS, I love that you are keep true to your beliefs and feel that both Bette and Tina need the space and time to sort themselves out. This is soimething I agree was so glossed over in the show. Perhaps the limitations of 12 hour long episodes per season or just a lack of imagination on the writers’ part.Bette dealt with TIna appropriately as Tina is blowing hot and sold right now. Tina needs to face her innermost desires and discover who and what she wants out of life.Angelica is a large part of that however Tina needs to focus on who does she want to co-parent this child with. After giving birth her hormones were all over the place and may have contributed to her sudden return to Heteroville but she has not forgiven Bette’s affair and used it as a beating stick to make Bette feel unworthy of their rlationship and love.Helena has quickly put a spring in Bette’s step and these former enemies have gotten to know a little more about each other’s lives and loves.I am a firm believer that walking in someone else’s shoes help you grow and understand the difficulties that life trows at you.Bette and Helena have both brought much of it upon themselves however deserve the chance to make amends and find love again.I can’t wait to read how this friendship develops.MTS, you continue to write with such clarity and honest emotion that I am swept away. Thank you so much for the mention and continued posts.Your Loyal Fan.
Oops! I just read my post and there’s definitely many errors and missing words especially towards the end, sorry for that but I’m tired and half-asleep.
Loving this story very much….is it going to be a belena fic or tibette though? i’d really like to know. Oh and finally Tina is willing to try and be friendly with Bette and she’s getting the cold shoulder. Frankly, i think Bette is being a bit harsh, they both made mistakes, but it seem like because Tina left her for a man, what she did was so unforgivable.
I am totally loving your story. Please bring on Belena! Bette needs something good in her life. Tina never has good timing with Bette, she needs to back off. I think maybe you should be different and not make this a tibette fic. But that’s just my own opinion. absolutely loving your fic PPS!
I am having a hard time accepting that Bette is having a good feeling with Helena. Even this is a FF, it’s very wrong. I think Tina should stop making Bette feel that she is getting deperate to get Bette’s attention. It seems that Bette’s heart right now is frozen to give Tina her time. What Tina should do is to fix her life and try to become the person that Bette knew before they got together. If she feels nothing to Henry, she should break up with him first. Yes, Tina should allow Bette to see Angelica, but, maybe it will be better if she just treat Bette in a civil way until Bette cools off. Bette’s behavior is understandable, but, since tina is still the mother of Angie, she could at least talk to tina is not so brutal way. Yes Tina hurt her so much, but at least she should be thankful that Tina did not really cut her off in Angie’s life. and lets not forget that she hurt Tina by cheating in the first place. and after that cheating Tina’s direction just goes spirally wrong. Helena should try to concentrate in finding a job so she can have a place of her own and not living in Alice’s couch instead of attending these parties with Bette. How can she even prove to Pegy that she is really willing to change if she’s not doing anything.
Excellent update. I so feel for Tina. I hope Bette does give her a chance. thank you for this story.
So Bette can forgive Helena but cant have lunch with Tina?I hate Tina in S 3 but this is really hard to read. For me Belena is so wrong.Thank you for the story.PPS
I think it Bette’s reaction to Tina as well as Helena is totally understandable. I mean when Helena made Bette’s life miserable, they didn’t know each other personally. They may have heard of each other but had no personal interaction. So I think it is easier for Bette to forgive Helena now that they have started getting to know each other. And lets not forget Tina played a willing part in Helena’s quest to destroy Bette’s life at the time too. Forgiving Tina on the other hand is going to take Bette much more time. They were together for 7 years and Tina’s treatment of Bette after her affair, as wrong and devastating as that affair was, was more than terrible. So Bette not willing to change her plans or seeing Tina at moment when it doesn’t concern Angelica is understandable. I for one don’t want to know if this is going to be a TiBette or BeLena or whatever story, I would like to enjoy just reading were you are going to take us. Thanks a lot again for coming back and posting this incredible story.
Ouch…for Tina. Well, they are both changing and there needs to be some middle ground when they get away from the pain and anger. Heck…no way, please no Belena. I get this is a journey…but the fact that Helena tried to ruin Bette both professionally and personally, that they can become trusting friends does not really jive. That said…definitely in for your ride of a journey!
I think the only way I can get through the rest of this story is to skip the Helena parts so I will reserve any further comments on Bette/Helena. I don’t think Bette is being harsh to Tina she’s just decided that she’s taking a stand and she’s sticking to her guns. Her committment is to Angie and if Tina wanted to discuss anything about Angie she’d be there in a flash. Tina is getting a taste of her own medicine and she can’t handle it. How many times did Bette try to talk to her in S1 and S2 where she just shut her out. I can think of several but just to name a few: when Bette came home early to spend time and Tina went to the gym, when Bette came to the apartment and Tina slammed the door in her face, when Bette came with flowers and an apology and Tina told her “not everything can be on your time Bette. I’m busy now” then Helena walks in and blows the whistle on the pregnancy, and in S5 after Stirfry sex Tina called Bette to spend time with her and Angie – Bette said she couldn’t because Jodi was there. Bette got rid of Jodi and called Tina who said “I can’t right now, I’m already at the Planet with Alice and Shane.” Why would she prefer to spend time with Alice and Shane when she could be with Bette and Angie? That was the scene where Angie thought the rats were “puppies” too cute.
(^_^) “Riding along” with you on that journey and, unless a major disagreement, hopefully till the end.——— I can see why you “think Tina wasn’t really ready to forgive Bette after the affair” and I agree with you to a certain point. I think Bette’s bold and egocentric if not selfish actions at the start of S2 made it hard for Tina to forgive her. Let us not forget that Bette didn’t rush after Tina when the latter found about the affair, she didn’t even call her! She was totally careless of the feelings of her seven years partner.——- She took her time, sleeping and staying with Candace for a good while before coming to the conclusion that she preferred Tina. Only then, she met her, not to tell her she was sorry, to ask her how she’s doing, feeling or how she’s managing with little money and no home? No, everything was about Bette: “I miss you, more than that I need you and I don’t think that I can live without you.” So if she came to a different conclusion, she wouldn’t even bother about a woman who gave up her career to start a family with her, meanwhile Tina still cared for her to the point of driving at two o’clock in the morning around their house…——— Bette wanted Tina back but as they were before, refusing to acknowledge that the affair impacted the dynamic of their couple and adjustment if not changes need to be done? Remember when in S2 Tina came back to stay in the guest room and convened to talk at diner about something she wanted to tell her? What happened, is Bette came home, vented about her workday as usual like many breadwinners, assuming that her wife can only be fine as she’s simply a homemaker. She fell in her old habits, making it difficult for Tina not only to tell her about the pregnancy but also to allow her to forgive, if not forget, and to restart afresh based on some changes in their couple.——– As Dan Worthy told Bette, Tina had to go through a lot of important changes in a short time which is not easy for a “sweet” rather sub personality to grow a pair and fend for herself in a difficult environment on different fronts at the same time: professional, personal and emotional. IMO, Tina was more confused and angry in S3 which reflected on her actions. She may acted badly but she’s not a bad person. A bad person won’t hide her pregnancy to spare her partner’s pain from a possible second miscarriage when she’s hurting from first one.————– Read you soon, i like your writings.
I find it hard to believe Bette is “giddy” to hear from and willing to become friends with a person whom she readily admits ruined her life, but she can’t even be civil to Tina, the mother of her child? Both parties did their damage in this relationship and it seems like all the blame here is one-sided. It gets rather tiring to have one person be made out to be the villain and the other not be held accountable at all for her actions. Bette definitely done her share of horrible things and it seems to me like she’s not taking that fact into consideration. Just sayin. Oh, and the possible relationship vibe between Helena/Bette is creeping me out. There’s no way I could even remotely think about a relationship with a person who has already been intimately involved with my ex, the love of my life, no less. Yuck.
Your use of the word “re-swizzle” just propelled you to a stratospheric level of awesomeness.
