The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Fifteen
Bette found herself in front of Alice’s building. She wasn’t in search of one thing in particular, she’d just been pulled in that direction. And though Helena was not aware of her presence, she felt better by being in the same vicinity of the woman who’d lightened her load in the last few days and made her feel more than a bearer of responsibility. Helena had made her feel like a friend and confidant and the purity of that combination had left a profound impression on Miss Bette Porter.
The ringing of her cell phone snapped her out of the jazz induced trance she’d found herself in. A quick glance at the LCD told her it was Tina calling. With that realization came the re-emergence of a worry line on her forehead that hadn’t been present since lunch at the Thai Palace.
"Hey T," Bette answered, glancing up one more time at Alice’s building. She was now aware of a vehicle approaching from her rear and not wanting to hold anyone up in her strange quest to Alice’s place, she pulled away as Tina replied.
"Hi, it’s me."
Bette’s tone was moderately hushed as gazed at her sleeping angel in the backseat. "How’d it go?" she asked, her eyes returning to the now dark road and the street lights that illuminated her path.
Tina sighed. "About as well as a break up can go I guess," there was a tremble of pending tears in her tone.
"Ohhh, T. I’m sorry," Bette replied. Her words were sincere, but automatic. She’d uttered that phrase an innumerable number of times over the course of their relationship.
Tina sniffed. "I’m just glad it’s over."
That drew Bette’s attention. She wondered if Tina had spoken the same words when she left the home they’d shared. "I see. Well, Angie’s asleep if you wanted to talk to her."
The shift in conversation made Tina’s brow scrunch and wondered just what part of her end of the conversation had brought about the change. "Is she? I figured she might be asleep. Are you guys at home?"
Home.
Sitting in the dark, on the couch of her chic two-bedroom condo, Tina’s shiny eyes filled with tears at the mention of that word. She once had a home. Not a house. A home. A space she filled with love and attention. Four walls that held her hopes and dreams and wishes, her past and the path to her future. Now that home was gone. In its place a string of residences that she slept in but could never truly rest in. Locations that offered shelter but could not offer the supreme sense of comfort that comes from being in the space that lives and breathes the hopes and dreams and little pieces of the person or people that reside within the four walls.
Bette had been part of her home.
Part of the pieces that made Tina who she was.
Tina’s home was gone. Plundered by her own hand. Destroyed at her will. Fragments of that home slipped and slid around her mind and she wished she had more alcohol or even a good bag of weed to make the memories fade and the reflection on her self quiet down.
"We’re not home. Boo and I grabbed a late dinner. She’s sleeping in the back and I’m driving her around," Bette replied.
Tina swallowed thickly over a lump lodged in her throat. "Was she fussy?"
Peace floated out in Bette’s tone as she spoke. "Noooo. She was great company. We had a really good time tonight. I’m glad she’s with me."
"I’m glad, too,"Tina replied.
Bette was unsure of what to say; an occurrence that seemed to happen all too often where Tina was concerned.
Finally, Tina broke the short silence and insisted that they end their brief talk so that Bette could concentrate on the road. Grateful for the reprieve and the distance from the one she’d once longed to have near, Bette graciously ended the call before glancing in the mirror at the backseat and smiling at her still sleeping little Boo.

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, Tina. Awesome, that Bette is having a wonderful time with her Boo. Angie lubs Mama
I am really enjoying your story. Very nice depiction of what Tina may have gone through after she realized she had made such a huge mistake with Henry. Love the writing style. Still have to pull for Tibette in the end though….. PPS
Thank you for this chapter, I simple love and adore when Angie is with either of mothers, because you can clearly see and feel the love that they have for her. Angie+Bette is perfection. I totally agree with your comments about Tina, but I like to add also that Tina didn’t love herself or think that she was worth much during those times and also in the first season.Unfortunately for Bette and Henry they got caught in the crossfire of Tina’s confusion, fear, self-loath and desperation for something to complete her which is why even thought I understand her actions and still love her, I totally don’t blame either Henry or Bette for reacting the way they have. Unintentionally pain hurt just as much as intentional pain, the only difference is that it’s easier to forgive unintentionally pain. Please have Tina concentration on herself and Angie.
Great update. I loved the Mama and Boo alone time. They needed it…I just hope that Tina will stop having that familiarity feeling. That Bette will symphatize how she feels. I feel that Tina still expect Bette to be on her side. I’m proud of Tina’s decision of starting a clean break by ending it w/ henry. I hope Tina will start to grow up again as a strong woman and a mother to Angie. I also think that she should just stop pinning for Bette and expect anything at this time. She needed a lot of work to prove not only to bette but to angie & all her friends that she is a strong and sincere person w/ a good heart and knows what she wants in her life…… I know that Bette is longing for some human contact and someone to talk. I just dont understand the bonding that she developed very fast with Helena, knowing that she was the reason of her many failures in her career, compared to her long timed friends such as Alice and shane or her sister Kit. Whatever is cooking in your mind MTS w/ regards to Bette and Helena relationship, I really am having a hard time thinking of them more than friends. Maybe my Tibette heart will break, but I will respect your decision as you are an amazing writer. :)
Tina had to learn the hard way that it’s not always greener on the other side. I’m still a TiBetter at heart and hope they find their way back to each other. PPS
i think bette and tina’s connection was broken before bette’s affair but since we didn’t really see anything on a show that told us about tibette 7 years together before that, i do believe that the connection was there…sometimes when you feel betrayed by someone you love, it hurts more than anything and it might take time to forgive and get that connection back…not sure where this story is going but no matter who bette will end up with, i hope tibette will at least get that connection back..i hope i make sense lol
Mama + Boo = priceless! Well, we know Tina’s incapable of spending time on her own, so I wonder what’s next. This is going to be interesting….PPS!
Poor Bette, wondering if Helena is sharing ‘textual goodness’ with another. Poor Tina, having to lie in the bed she’s made. Bette needs her new friend, and Tina… she needs one too. I just don’t think Bette can be that friend right now. Tina will either have to look elsewhere for that friendship, or be a better friend to herself. Thanks for the post, MTS! :)
Bette is really enjoying motherhood. She deserves it. Tina is floundering. So confused.
Spumoni lub Angelica. Spumoni lub Bette. Spumoni lub MTS. Tina? Um. No comment.
Bette and Angie are so cute together.Another great chapter.Thank you.
Loved the way you described Bette’s interaction with Angie and I can understand to an extend Tina’s need to talk to Bette, after her emotional conversation with Henry, but on the other hand I also understand Bette diverting the convo to Angelica. Bette and Tina are on shaky ground at the moment, they didn’t resolve any of their problems, and I can imagine that Bette’s really confused at the moment about Tina acting as if they were still best of friends. In addition Bette’s need to seek out Helena is perfectly understandable to me too. She was after all the first one to pay attention to Bette and started to show interest in her. Taking into consideration their similarities such as being raised by very demanding single parents, both failing in their long term relationships, both not being the birth mothers to their children and having to fight for joint custody, it makes perfectly sense for Bette turn to Helena instead of her other friends or sister. Great post, thanks very much.
Just wonderful. Excellent writing. thank you.
Bette and Angie are so cute together. The pages fly by so fast. I need more, more, more! PPS!!
Hey MTS, A great couple of chapters as Tina and Henry really got a chance to break-up properly. It was interesting to read Tina’s reaction to Henry’s accusations that Tina had used used him as a means to an end. Then the talk between Bette and Tina added more fuel to the fire as Bette began to see her Tina re-emerge. The best bit was that Bette was still focussed on Helena.Bette and Angie together were adorable. Can’t wait to read more as I am still hopeful of a reunion for Bette and Tina as they have returned to their own selves.Thank you for this insightful drama.Your Loyal Fan.
Keep it coming. Please :D
I love Angie and Bette time. I really can’t see Bette with anyone else but Tina. How ever, Tina needs to know herslf and what she really wants before Bette and Her could try to be together. They have a wonderful baby girl and I think they have to concentrate on her wellbeing first which is asking a lot of communication tolerence and forgiveness, less anger and hate from both of them.It will be great to have them back together, Angie deserves all the effort from both of them but they also own it for each other.
