The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Six
Alice wiped at a few tears that had slid from her eyes. “I know. I’ve missed that. But promise me one thing, Porter.”
Concern darkened Bette’s eyes. “What is it?” she asked.
“Promise me that you won’t make me cry every time we hang out. God. All of WeHo is going to see me cry. It’ll ruin my rep,” Alice replied, her words coated in comedic congeniality.
The concern faded from Bette’s gaze, replaced by a lopsided grin. "Riiiiiight. And we all know how much of a big, bad, butchy dyke you are."
"Exactly," Alice replied.
"So tell me Miss Big Bad Dyke, how are you otherwise? What’s going on in your world?" Bette asked before bringing a clear mug of mint tea to her supple lips. They were lightly glossed and gave a soft shine.
This was the green light Alice Pieszecki needed to let her own lips loose. She took a shallow breath before she began running down the latest happenings in her world.
"You know Peggy Peabody cut Helena off, right?" she began.
Bette nodded and Alice continued.
"Well, all she has to live on is a credit card with a $3000 balance and a monthly allowance of $1500."
Bette’s eyes grew wide, hot mint tea on her tongue. "Really?" she managed to mutter.
"Yes. I know she’s not your favorite person and all, but the poor thing is really destitute."
"No, no. I used to hate Helena. She was the bane of my existence. But I’m over that. She’s not the same person she was before. Even I can see that. I’d heard about what happened between her and Peggy but I didn’t know it was going to be quite so bad. She still owns the studio, right? At least she has an income," Bette replied.
Alice shook her head, "She doesn’t have that either. It’s basically been repossessed. She’s unemployed now. No job at all."
Bette frowned, "How’s she gonna afford that mansion in Malibu?"
"Not her mansion anymore. It’s been repossessed as well. She’s living with me."
Bette’s eyes widened in surprise and she leaned back in her chair. "Alice, let me get this straight. Helena Peabody, sole heiress to the Peabody fortune, is living with you in your one-bedroom apartment?" asked Bette.

Thanks for the post. Keep up the great work.
Friends and family are there to help us as life moves forward…and it does, even if it is one teeny tiny step at a time. Pretty soon your momentum will help make it smoother, the steps bigger. Thanks MTS!
It´s good to see Bette and Alice talk, being there for eachother. Great story. Thanks for the update
This Bette seems to be confident and have a clearer purpose and direction for her life. I love that she has picked up her friendship w/Alice once again.
I love your portrayal of Bette Porter and it’s great to see her not only moving on with her own life but also helping and supporting her family and friends to deal with the issues in their lives as well. Tina is missing out on so much of the good that is Bette Porter. I’m with Dainty on the Jodi thing – PLEASE KEEP HER OUT OF THIS STORY. I think even if your version of her is likable I still wouldn’t want her for Bette. She’s not worthy!! Thanks for posting often. You are giving us such a great storyline and dialogue that it inspires the conversations. Really good stuff. PPS
Amazing story.Thank you.
Thank you for this update and this story. Excellent.
It’s so good that Bette is moving on with her life and not hanging her chin in the dirt as Tina would have her do. This move will drive Tina nuts especially if Bette starts to date someone. JUST PLEASE DON’T LET IT BE jodi, that would spoil the mood of your story. Great update. Thanks for posting.
have been away so didn’t have a chance to read and comment but just finished 4 chapters in a row…this is good, so good…i can see the struggle, especially where tina is concerned, she is trying to justify her return to men but it’s clear that things are not what they seem…can’t wait to see what’s next
