The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Twenty-Six

Bette eyed her curiously, though she could literally feel her heart softening. “Thank you. I’m sorry too. I overreacted.”

    “Please, don’t apologize to me.”

Bette smiled. “Okay. I won’t. But I do appreciate your coming in to see me. So you like my office?”

Tina nodded, her blonde hair shifting as she moved. “I do. It has a nice energy. And it just feels like you.”

As Tina studied the room, Bette studied her. She gazed openly at the wonder in Tina’s eyes, at the curve of her lips and the dip of her neck. Her eyes traveled down to the dark-pink, button-up, short-sleeved dress shirt that seemed made for Tina’s curves. She was in professional attire, but the swell of her breasts underneath the pink fabric was unmistakeable.

Bette swallowed thickly over the lump in her throat and said softly, “Tina?”

Hazel eyes met dark brown ones. “Yes?”

    “You look good.”

A flush crept up Tina’s neck and a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Thank you. You look good too.”

As promised, Jackie reappeared with her final warning knock. “I’ll be right there,” Bette called, her eyes still on Tina’s.

Tina stood to leave and smiled. “I had one other reason in stopping by.”

    “And that would be?”

“On Friday, at the movies, we said we’d get together this Friday to talk through some things. I don’t want to rush you. We can talk whenever you’re ready. No rush. But I wanted to let you know that I still want to have that talk. And I’ll wait for you for whenever you’re ready.” asked Tina.

Bette studied her, balancing her emotions with this Tina that sat before her. This Tina was calm and rational and was reminiscent of all the things Bette missed about her former lover. Maybe she’d been wrong. Maybe there was still something between them. Maybe they could at least have closure if nothing else. Now that Tina wasn’t pressuring her, Bette felt calmer and more willing to compromise.

She smiled softly. “This Friday should be fine. I think we need to have that talk. Do you want to let me know what time works best for you?”

Tina nodded and nervously toyed with her golden strands. “I will. Thanks again for seeing me. I’ll call you later today.”

They ended up walking out together with Bette hurrying off to meet Phyllis and with Tina standing in the hallway watching the love of her life stalk down the hall in three inch heels. She sighed deeply, remembering when those long legs and the curves that rested above them belonged to her.

Shaking away the memories of her previous encounter with Bette and Helena, Tina made her way outside into the southern California sunshine and slipped her sunglasses onto her face. Today had gone better. Much, much better. She had taken the time to approach Bette in a way that would be unassuming and disarming. Not only that, she’d worn her shortest work skirt and hoisted up her cleavage with her most flattering black bra. She knew Bette very well and it was time that she remembered what she had once taken for granted.

Driving away, she laughed at the absurdity of thinking that Bette and Helena were having some sort of fling. Of all the women in West Hollywood, Helena would surely be the last woman on Bette’s list.

“Such an idiot, Tina. The next thing you’ll be expecting to see is pigs flying,” she said to herself.

    1. Well, this bette is really interesting. I know she still feels the pain and she is vulnerable, believe me, I totally understand. But she has behaved like a child :(. Let’s see what she has done, shall we? She pursued sole custody of Angie; she took Angie from Tina; she is developing an unbelievable friendship with a person who had messed up her life and her love of life; she felt lonely, so she went out for some fuck and almost fuck a person who is engaged with other person; when tina was upset with this whole helena thing, she got angry and shot tina with some harsh words; then tina apologized to her, finally she can function well (checking out tina). Sorry, I don’t see maturity in these behaviors. It seems her life depends on other people and she lost control on herself and self-confidence. It is tina who reached out to her, it is tina who made first move to bridge the gap, and it is tina who stopped by her office to apologize, and it is tina who said let’s talk. All bette did is busy showing ex-enemy her obsession. For me, poor Bette is so passive and seems not to have any idea what her goal is. I hope when she talks to tina, she can show some maturity. Thank you very much for the brilliant story. I just want to share my thought about the character. No offense to the writer. Thank you again!

    2. well I do agree with you 56ying on the fact that Bette is lost and seems she can’t fing her old-self back. But not on the non mature thing, coz, she’s a impulse girl so right now she has overreacting behavior but still mature in her own way. As for the dvp bet. bette & Helena it’s a fresh thought and sometimes we’re only enemies about some situation but when you really talk you may have your vision slighty change. :)

    3. Ewwwwww Tina reminded me of Nadia! =( Ughhh! I just don’t like the manipulative side that she’s showing. I honestly enjoy the Bette and Helena friendship the most. When I see the update has them interacting, I get the biggest smile on my face while I hungrily devour every word of the chapter. =) Keep em coming. I’m really enjoying it.

    4. Well, I loved that up to the last couple of sentences! J/K. Helena’s growing on me. It sounds as though she’s never really experienced a deep platonic female friendship before. Is that even possible in a lesbian? So…she really, really needs to learn how to maintain a friendship, and not worry about it going any further….please! PPS!

    5. Dear Lord above I sure hope the friendship stays just a good friendship. Tina did exactly what she needed to do, apologize, secure the fact of the next conversation they would have and leave it up to Bette, who quickly said yes. Tina’s attire was designed to get the attention of the woman she loved and it hit it’s mark. I don’t think it was scheming on her part at all, it served its purpose as a reminder of what once was. Please let Helena spend the weekend in NYC, do’t let her come back to LA before Saturday night or Sunday night, she really needs to take care of her clients in NY. Tina will NOT see pigs fly. Great update. Thanks for posting.

    6. Good start for Tina to visit Bette in her office, apologize and don’t push her into their Friday meeting. But the way you ended it has me a little worried, because she again gets carried away and looses focus. Why would she be so sure that Bette could never be interested in Helena or vice versa. They are both attractive women with lots of charm, she of all people should know that. Really hope Helena makes it back Saturday, after her pending conversation with Tina Bette is going to need her newest friend really bad. Also liked the way Bette showed Helena that she cares for her and supports her in her new job, by ordering room service and sending her a message. Thanks.

    7. oh so sweet Bette’s gesture to Helena. I’m just wondering if this thing will be only platonic between Hel&Bette, coz Helena is so cute being in the friendship context. Will Bette&Tina get a real closure or go for another shot? I would really like to see the dvp between the belena arc and maybe see pig flying. lol In here there’s 2 clan Tibette and belena, whos’s gonna win? lol

    8. Good step for Tina to apologize and not take Bette for granted and I’d like her to consider not to be taken for granted herself too. Hopefully, “her shortest work skirt and hoisted up cleavage” will attract the attention of some smart and good looking alpha (her type) women who’ll ask her out and Tina keeping her word to give Bette some space or respecting her wishes for a closure, will give herself the right to get back on the dating scene and a chance to be happy. Bette’s thoughtfulness is great but is that all behind her gesture and words? That gesture reminded me of the Bette on the show who went to extreme lengths to whine, dine and taking risks to get that infamous sign to please Jodi and win her back but never did any of the kind for Tina whether at the beginning in S1 or in S5-S6! SAD! I’m looking for how Tina’s Friday and Helena’s WE will play out. Read you very soon.

    9. Just kill me….stab me in the freakin’ heart if Bette and Helena get together as anything more than friends. Tina wants the love of her life back and is planning a way to make it happen by remembering the good they know about each other….I don’t think that’s nefarious or scheming at all. I think they messed up their marriage together…I hope the 2 of them, together, can put it back together. Of course, this is just my view of our girls. I continue to read your updates…thank you. :)

    10. Head is saying good for Helena and Bette. Heart still feels sad for Tina. Hope Tina matures faster and moves on in life. No point trying seduce someone who doesn’t want to be seduced. Thanks for posting.

    11. I think I saw a pig flying yesterday :-)Maturity and forgiveness is indeed a theme! Bette is too thoughtful….that was such a nice gesture to H…Enjoyed the update!!
