”Yeah, his idea.” Shane shows me where inside a carved wooden horse head is the place she hides the spare key.

    Bette’s House

    9:30 pm

As I walk into my bedroom I take long swallows from a cool glass of water. My phone alerts me to a text. Christ! How many since I went to run? Jesus! I scroll through them to catch their headlines. Some are stupid but mostly funny comments from East Coast friends encouraging me to hurry up and find a new girlfriend before the book takes off. Theory being: You can always explain how it’s all bullshit later.

I think of how that could even be possible? To be amusing, to answer all their questions, and then undress them and hope the conversations about Tina are over. I delete as I read. Nothing comes close to bringing me any real levity. Then the last three catch my eye. Phone numbers I don’t recognize. I click on the full messages. One after another I see interview requests for my comment on the upcoming movie feature of Les Girls. A book by Jenny Schecter and the movie produced by Shaolin Studios and Tina Kennard. Maybe we could do our interviews together, a reporter wonders?

Goddammit! I pick up my phone to call her. The book back in my lap. My anger returns in force. I snap the pages through the chapters of my destruction. My side catches again with a fiery spasm. If you’d listen I’d tell you what I should’ve said years ago. If he ever saw a tear on my face after my mother left, Tina…

My chin falls to my chest.  It took a monster like Faye Buckley to drag one out of me. And fuck yes! The rest was madness and it should have been your arms and your passion I turned to. But like my tears, I was never able to find it.

Goddammit! I press in her number. She answers.

“Tina, I’m reading Les Girls. Just tell me. What the fuck?” I demand.

”What the fuck, what exactly, Bette?”

”I guess your studio publicist is fielding all your interview requests so you haven’t seen them?”

”No, I’ve been away from my phone.”

”I see.” My eyes fly up to the ceiling. I control my tone. This is not her fault.

    1. Loving the insight thoughts from both Tina and Bette.

I hope that Bette tells Tina about the whys of her turning to the carpenter like she did in this chapter.

      Wonderful writing, thanks.

    2. It’s not an original comment, but like dozens before me, I love the way you write Bette’s thoughts. And the way Tina gets to their “deep structure” (USUALLY, anyway, altho maybe not when she most needed to).

    3. Bette is so impulsive, so organic. She is sophisticated but you strip away all of her barriers and subterfuge. You just expose her core which is stark and primal. She becomes very relatable. Many of us have that fantasy of simpletons to destroy that which disturbs our “nice, orderly” lives. Or have someone do it for us. Tina had that w/Bette. She slayed Tina’s dragons. I remember in watching “The Sopranos”, Tony offered to take care of an unknown rapist that had attacked Dr. Melfi (?), his psychiatrist. And she was tempted even though she abhorred Tony’s life style and murderous ways. In a simple way, it’s comforting to have someone that can be one’s personal “fixer”. Another insightful chapter.

    4. I loved it!
It was really good to read Bette’s testimony as to why she was sleeping, the carpenter. I love Bette’s anger, it was fun to read, as she watched Jenny through the window, and imagined how she will hurt her. :D
it seems Tina’s heart has been established of the change. but they still need to talk a lot of things.
but I trust that they can be solve ;)
      Thank you potsing for this.
I look forward to the next chapter.

    5. Wow, you did it again, kind of unexpected from the brainstorming. But again you hit the nail on the head. There is change in the wind… Their masks are slipping aside and we are seeing their real selves slowly appearing. It’s good for Bette to be able to channel her anger at Jenny and come up with various ways of torturing her already tortured soul, her bat shit crazy side. The one thing she did was to observe and pay attention, Maybe a lesson to be learned in airing your laundry for the world to see.
Our couple’s anger has dissipated and they can now hear the words each speaks. Too bad it came so late. But the glimmer of hope shines on the horizon.
Well, done BB, well done. I’m in awe once again.

    6. This was brilliant Blackbird. I can see Bette arguing with Aristotle, “F*** moral virtue!” as she contemplates Jenny’s murder! Did she ask about Shane’s spare key because she is thinking of sneaking into the house and re-decorating Jenny’s room or stealing some secrets to keep Jenny’s ambitions in check?

Good job on the Gypsy theme. Tina should go to that gypsy fortune teller. Eagerly awaiting for your next chapter.

    7. Love it, Love it! BB ..I lol when Shane find Bette in her fence and Bette said “Decided to do some chin ups in your tree.” Subtle Bette so subtle :p….A bit worried thou that she might push her plan when she ask Shane if she have a spare key for Shay?..Good thing logic wins over anger.

    8. great story blackbird!!! i can undy Bette’s frustration about Jenny’s book . i wouldn’t want anyone write a story about me in a book that is deeply private. i would yell at Bette go for it.. hit Jenny with your boxing gloves without feeling remorse or regrets. i would.. no second thoughts…. haha keep up the good work… : )
