The Very Thought of You, Chapter 21
I took a deep breath, unsure of what she’d have to recount. I knew of her book, obviously, and I had some vague idea of the work she’d done, but, unlike my life, hers had been at its beginning when we parted and free from the grasps and tangles of anyone else’s. Whatever it held, though, I needed to know. I nodded, praying it would be relatively painless.
“After we… stopped talking,” she started slowly, steadily growing more animated and possessed by her story as she went, drawing me in as she always had with the emotion she carried for every person and place she mentioned evident in her theatrical telling, “I had a really hard time. I pretty much shut down like I did every time I was getting over someone, only with you it was a lot worse because I knew…” she stopped.
“What?”
“That you were the one I was, am supposed to be with. I fought for a long time with the desire to track you down and make you talk to me and explain what happened, but, in the end, logic won out.”
“I would have gone with you,” I inserted without turning.
She nodded than resumed her story, “I think I knew that. More than that, though, I knew that you had made your decision, and I shouldn’t interfere, no matter badly I wanted to, somehow, make you choose me,” she sighed wearily. “Anyway, after that, I had no intention of letting anyone in again, ever, not after I lost you.
“After I graduated from Vassar, I went to C.U., as you, apparently, know,” she smiled, “and pursued my art history degree. While I was out there, I lived in West Hollywood and went out… a lot. Well, you know the reputation WeHo has. It’s a bit of an understatement to say I did my part to keep its rep alive. I stayed there for a few years after I graduated and taught and did research for the university. I also wrote a book at that time, though I still don’t know when I found the time.”
“You wrote another book? I’m sure Angelica would adore it.”
“It’s been out of print for decades,” she chuckled. “I’m afraid it wasn’t very good.

Yes, Tina swallow that one, why don’t don’t ya? I am happy that Bette was able to find love again but sadden that she lost it. Post soon, as soon as are fully awake!
At least Bette had loved someone, it doesn’t sound like tina did, not with Henry, and that is the sadder of the two tales of 30yrs…
How am I a masochist? O.o I must’ve missed something. Anyway it’s good to see that Bette actually had a life instead of moping around for 30 years.
My good friend Bandtfan told me I had to read this story. She was right but don’t tell her that. I’m just sad that I have to wait now. Thanks so much for this story. It is well paced and very believable.
I know the feeling. Too many great stories, too little time. Yours is one of the most amazing ones. It´s so good to know that Bette didn´t pine away for Tina all those years but managed to create what seems to have been a truly fullfilled life emotionally and professionally.
Hey…well i think ive told you that i think this story is exceptional..it just keeps getting better..your last chapter had me feeling lonely for New York…im not Amarican but have been there alot and love the place so much.that and the walk in the park brought back so many memories…Gulp!..this chapter…well i had a lump in my throat..Absolutly brilliant!…Hope you had a great time in my favorite place..i think i was a little envious when you mentioned Time square!..lol..Cya B
Brilliant as always PPS
Yikes. I never meant to offend in any way. I was trying to compliment your storytelling–that I was completely engaged though the events seemed improbable (you are right–that is the better word choice). I enjoy you story and am very sorry for my badly written compliment.
Oh! SO glad to see Bette was happy! Thanks NY :)
Ok Ok now take me to ecstasy NYG. LoL This story is blowing me far far away.
I guess Tina still could become Bette’s second wife…. But the chance of being her ONLY wife is forever gone…. *sigh* Still, I’m glad Bette found happiness… I hope there’ll be a lot more of that coming her way. Thanks, NY! This is an amazing story…
LOL! I’m actually gulping as well… But what did we expect? It’s like in the show, I think Jodie is okay, but I just don’t like to see Bette with someone else than Tina, even though she left her… I mean, a woman like Bette Porter so deserves to be loved! Oh, what can I say, I’m just a hopeless Tibetter at heart… Thanks for the chap!
I so glad that Bette did find happiness, she has to much love to give to be by herself. It hurt when she keep saying I lost two loves in my life’ Losing one would KILL ME. Tina dont be crazy all your life go for that brilliant, loving woman. Find out what love is all about and life. thanks
I’m happy Bette was able to find another love…to lose it is tragic…but for your first love to find you again (however accidental it was) is just fate! As always, another great chapter. I hope Tina pursues a relationship with Bette and doesn’t wimp out and go back to Henry.
I am glad that Bette did find a second love, but now she is alone again and if Tina walks away this time then she is a fool. To be able to get a second chance with your soul mate all these years later is amazing. Tina needs to listen to her heart and be with her true love. NY, see I love your story so much that I convinced my good friend vfullart to read it. Glad you had a great time in NYC my friend.
I agree with Jobadge…that could’ve been you Tina…thanks.
There you go Tina…, gulp you may…! That could have been you! Brilliant as always mate.
wife??? good on bette, i’m so glad she had someone who loved hernow give tina the courage to leave henry and heal bette’s wounds…she needs loving so I’m guessing anne sent tina back….pps
Nice to see Bette had a happy life, even if it was for a short time.
I’m well pleased that Bette at least had someone else to love. Tina could’ve had it all… but she made the selfish choice, and in her jealousy, selfish she remains. Nice chapter, NY.
Tina, you didn’t think Bette’d be mourning you her entire life, right? Obviously, you have no right to be jealous of Anne. Did you think you were the only one allowed to get married? Not to mention that your husband is somebody you never truly loved? Well, look at me, I’m having a conversation with a fictional character here… But I’m just pretty angry with Tina. And why do I have a feeling this story is gonna have a very sad ending?
Damn, you have a great storytelling talent.
