    The Very Thought of You, Chapter 4

    *          *            *            *            *

                The first time we talked on the phone was a shock.  I nonchalantly asked Bette for her phone number, an act I disregarded even as it registered as a ridiculously bold and foolish move.  Somehow, I knew hearing her voice would make her real.  Up until now, there was nothing tangible, nothing meaningful, just words on a screen.  This was hazardous, an act that I would soon realize put the last nail in the coffin, the one that opened the doorway to all future furtherance of our interactions.

                I slowly, deliberately dialed the digits, paused before hitting send, and waited as it rang.  Once… Twice… and she picked up.  For the first time I heard her voice, and it jolted through me, tearing my world asunder.  I would later try to ignore the effect it had on me, but the lack of sleep that night was telling.  We began chatting, giggling nervously in turn.  A momentary pause hung in the air before I picked up the conversation, dominating it as I had promised I would.  We talked about nothing of real substance, easily shifting stories and topics.  I had never conversed this freely on the phone before, and she effortlessly filled the gaps when I allowed myself to pause and take a breath.

    I eventually started to get a little silly from lack of sleep.  It made her laugh, which only goaded me further, her chuckle inciting chills.  Finally, she said she should let me sleep, as if it were ever a possibility, and I wished her luck on the exam she had the next day.  The brief pause before she thanked me told me she appreciated my remembering.  I always remembered.  Those little things meant so much to her, and I loved doing them.  She wished me sweet dreams, as she always did, which I loved, and we hung up.

                The confusion at the simplicity of this significant event ran through my head.  I thought of everything and nothing that night.  I think it was then the fantasies truly started.  Now when I thought of her, I was able to tie in a warm speech and extensive vocabulary.  Her amused tone laced the visions that appeared unbidden in my mind, shutting down all rational thinking.  With the introduction of a voice, I was able to build on any ideas that fleetingly showed themselves before.  I’m not sure I acknowledged the implications of these thoughts that night; it was too much to handle, having just made that very real contact.  I knew I was in trouble.

    1. *Sigh*… there seems to be a lot of lost love in this story… so sad when an opportunity for that great love slips away. I’m hoping it’s not too late for our favorite couple – see? even in this story I still see Bette and Tina as a couple. I love this, NY… pps.

    2. Wow, Ny. I think you are writing a story about me. Lol. Keep writing, the funny thing is i dont read things about Bette and Tina but you have definately caught my eye.!!!!!

    3. That Bette would get over her phone thing to call Tina says a lot about how Bette felt. They just haven’t said it to each other yet. Thanks for the chapter, NY, I’m loving this so far.

    4. I can relate to this story so much… being married and having those intense feelings for someone you haven’t even met, the thinking of that person from down to dusk… well we did meet…, and nearly seven years on, we’re still very much together!
