    Author Notes:

    “She, whom I love, I wish to be free, even from me,” Bette whispered softly.

    “What is THAT supposed to mean Al? Of course I want to go see my sister and spend time as a family…but I have work commitments of my own,” Bette sighed in defeat, her shoulders sagging.

    Tina reached out and squeezed Bette’s hand gently, trying to reassure her. Bette relaxed slightly and smiled back tightly at her.

    “How long? And can you not go the next day?” she rolled her eyes at the sky.

    “You know what, Al, just go. Not being with me on the night of our tenth anniversary is not going to change how things are in this marriage right? I get the logic,” she hung up, completely frustrated by the conversation with Alice as Tina rubbed her back, between her shoulder blades.

    “FUCK!” She screamed and flung her cell phone with all her might. It landed in the water fountain.

    “Bette!” Tina ran towards the phone, trying to see if she could salvage it.

    Bette ignored her and started limping away, trying to get a hold of her anger by focusing on her pain.

    “Bette! Wait…what happened?” She fell into step after trying unsuccessfully to retrieve the phone.

    “Alice is going to LA on some stupid work assignment two days from today, Saturday, on OUR wedding anniversary!”

    “What?! You have to stop her or go with her!” Tina exclaimed. She could not believe that Alice would stay away from Bette on their big ten. Tina could never envision doing the same.

    “Oh, I don’t give a fuck anymore. Let her go—I will toast to my freedom instead,” Bette muttered under her breathe.

    She stopped and turned towards Tina, “she, whom I love, I wish to be free—even from me,” Bette whispered softly.

    “Bette—you cannot let that happen! So what if we failed at our first attempt, we will try again.”

    “Try what again? Marriage or sex?” Bette remarked dryly.

    “Bette!” Tina chuckled in protest. “You know, I have been reading a book in which the author says…”

    “Enough! I don’t want to know about the ridiculous advice from those stupid pop-culture books you keep reading. We keep trying to salvage our marriages, save our relationships on a daily basis. I need a holiday from all of this—For one day, I just want to be free and do whatever my heart desires.”

    1. Mid-season break? As long as you don’t leave us with a cliffhanger…please… I see the interaction between Bette and Tina differently. As I read it, I wondered if Bette wasn’t trying to glean a little information about whether Tina would consider an affair. Coming off strongly opposed allowed Tina to offer a reminder to not be so judgmental. I LOL when Bette said that the main character complained all the time about his leg. That was so funny! I thought the chapter was so well written. Sorry it was a struggle and I can’t wait to see the next one!

    2. Bette and Alice’s relationship is speeding toward the cliff of doom. I just hope that it doesn’t blow up beyond repair of their old friendship. Can’t wait to geta chance to read the next chapter.

    7. excellent chapter the strain didn’t show. Interesting Bette and an all of her high morals we will see how that pan out when she is stuck in “those shoes”. Don’t tease us any more. Please

    8. Great chapter!!! As for the opera, re-create the Alice/Bette scene from the show…heheheh. Seriously, B&T need to admit to themselves and each other what they feel, then go find a hotel ;).
