    Tina — Plan B, Pt. 66

I left Jess calm and in her room. Doing homework, I hope. Now, to deal with the other half of the equation.

Bette. Asleep in the deck chair. After this afternoon, I probably shouldn’t be having the thoughts that I’m having. But once again, I come across her, sitting there, asleep, and the temptation remains.

This time I have to pass, of course. But it remains

It takes a few moments for me to consider what I’m going to say. This gives me time to just observe, and enjoy.

Sitting on the edge of the chair, I run a finger up her arm and she begins to stir.

Her eyes flutter open, and mouth widens to a smile. “Hey.”

    “Hey yourself.”

    “How’s she doing?”

Always the question of the moment, to which I sometimes have an answer. “She’s settled.”

    Bette nods.

Perfunctory discussion ended, now it gets tougher. I take a breath. “Do you still have your hotel?”

    “Yes.”

    “Are you okay to drive?”

Not the most graceful way I’ve ever dismissed a woman from my home, but I believe the meaning needs to be clear.

    “I would rather stay here.”

    “I know.” And I won’t say that I disagree.

Bette bites at her lip, something she’s always done when feeling some amount of doubt. People used to think that Bette Porter never doubted anything. She’d never admit to doubt, but for anyone knowing the sign, there were rare instances where it was there. “But I have to go.”

My finger again traces on her arm. “I know.”

She grabs hold of my hand. “Tina, for today, I’m sorry.”

All of my insecurities rush in. Sorry for sharing herself with me? Sorry for staying with Jess? Sorry for coming to California? Perhaps my confusion showed.

And perhaps she can still read my emotions. “Sorry only for the affect it had on Jess. I didn’t think”

And I did? I was the one who initiated our afternoon, a fact that she’s kind enough to not bring up.

“But I’m not sorry for today.” She brings my hand to her mouth, placing a kiss in the palm, punctuation to her words. “Are you?”

    Again, the lip biting.

    “No.”

    “T, I lo-”

I put a finger over her lips. I can’t hear this. It’s too soon. It’s just not right. “Not yet.”

Hopefully she can understand. We’re working on now, but does that mean forever? Until things are a little more set, until we’ve got things more resolved, no. I can’t hear any such words. Hearing them, then having her leave or sending her away would be too much.

    “I am welcome back?”

“Do you want to come back?”

I don’t always know why I say such things. Sometimes the words come before adequate thought. These words hurt. I should have known as much.

“Yes.” Her eyes steady, holding eye contact with me. “I want to spend time with both of you.”

Right answer, Porter. In spite of myself.

“I need to spend time with both of you. We need to be a family.”

For the second time today I find myself taking advantage of our situation, and leaning in to give her a kiss. She reciprocates, but this time, pulls my hand into hers rather than letting it continue to move from her face, to her neck, and lower.

    And I know she’s right.

She hugs me to her. “We have forever, T. I’m not going anywhere.”

A little tiny bit of me almost lets myself believes her. And I smile.

    1. You know I love Jess. Her feelings are valid but GOD! she’s putting a strain on these 2! Can’t we send her away to boarding school or something??? Just kidding but I do hold that letting something in the dynamic bewteen BnT or BnJ change and then everything else will fall into (or out of) place. But at least we’ll have an outcome, eh?

    2. Difficult conversation to have for the two of them, but they seemed to handle it well even with the insecurities that are bubbling just beneath the surface – for both of them.

Tina’s still got it for Bette, she’s just making sure that she protects her heart until she can bring herself to confirm that she really, really wants it and is willing to take the chance again.

Bette did the right thing by not pressing the issue of staying. It will bode well with Jess, I suspect. Now, we can only hope that Jess doesn’t try to stage a coup in Bette’s absence.

Spending time with the two of them will more than likely be fraught with bumps in the road. Jess, Tina and Bette are not yet on the same page and there is still a lot of the past that needs to be forgiven…by all of them.

I love the way you portrayed their tenderness towards each other, it speaks volumes to what they truly feel for each other.

      Excellent chapter.

    3. Thanks for finding time in your busy schedule to post. I’d take a paragraph if that’s all you were able to offer. You manage to say so much with your writing, it really is a pleasure.

    4. Just read your last 5 posts and had to comment instantly…well I did take a moment to wipe the solitary tear from my eye. Pseud I think I looooove you…….r stories.

    5. No matter what seems to be taking place in their lives, they always have those thoughts regarding one another. After this afternoon, I am not surprised that Tina was still having them when she looked at Bette in the lounge chair.
I think next time Tina wants to
shake her tailfeather with Bette, they better do it in Bette’s hotel room.
I am glad that Bette was so understanding about having to leave and I am equal delighted that she told Tina, “We have forever, T. I’m not going anywhere.”
Oh, and another thing that made me smile, “A little tiny bit of me almost lets myself believes her. And I smile.”

      BELIEVE Tina, BELIEVE!

    6. I’m so glad I checked one last time tonight before going to sleep. This is what we have missed while you were away. Your amazing ability to say so very much, without saying much at all. This story has felt so good from the start and it just keeps getting better. And I have faith that you will get the three of them to where they should be and in such a way, that will all want to celebrate. I love going to sleep feeling good, thank you.

    7. Yay to Jess for setting the ball in motion in the first place by looking Bette up in NYC!
I think we lose sight of that fact.

      Goodnight, Jess, wherever you are.

    8. If I was a dog, my tail would be wagging so hard! Great chapter, nice, relaxing! Tina is a bit insecure about Bette, isn’t she? Bette, prove her wrong, be there for both of them; and be a family.

      Thanks!

    9. pseud – you know how i feel. ive told you eought. it was short, but i know how busy you are. it did break my heart that tee asked her to leave. but i guess i understand. i believe and tina had better also. thanks again.

    10. i hope Tina dont let Jess take care of her life..if she wants to Bette to stay she must stay..Jess need to know and accept that Bette is important to her mom and vice versa and she is too..great P post soon love it
