    Vignettes: Chapter 54

Tina and Bette walked into the Planet Saturday morning to meet Alice and Dakota.  The little girl was drinking her tea smoothie and eating a blueberry muffing while chatting wildly to Alice who was in the mood for some adult company after spending the entire evening and morning with Tinas daughter.  When she spotted Bette and Tina she almost fell out of her seat as the waved her arms in the air so that theyd see her.  Bette glanced at Tina over her sunglasses and raised her eyebrows.

Looks like Alice had a rough night.

Tina smiled but kept walking.  She rested her hands on Dakotas shoulders and bent down to kiss the top of her head.

How was your sleepover honey?  Tina asked as she sat down.

    Great!  Wasnt it Aunt Alice?

Oh it was great, thats for sure.  We played hide and seek until two in the morning because somebody had such a good hiding spot that I couldnt find her… for hours.  And when I did she was asleep.  Then I woke up at six to find someone in the kitchen trying to make breakfast.

I wanted to bring her breakfast in bed.  Dakota said, smiling.

That was a nice idea.  Im sure Alice appreciated it.  Bette replied.

It was a lovely thought, Dakota.  Alice said.  So… how was your night?  You both look refreshed and if I may add, youre glowing.

Well, some of us do get breakfast in bed.  Bette said.

And where did you have dessert?  In bed as well?  Alice arched and eyebrow, smirking.

Not everything was enjoyed in bed.  Tina said, glancing at Dakota.

Oh right… I forgot about the couch and the pool and the table and the shower…

Who eats in the shower?  Dakota asked.

And no more talk of food… anywhere.  Tina said to Bette and Alice.  Nobody eats in the shower, sweetie.  Aunt Alice was just being silly.

Tina took Dakota home and decided to meet up with Bette later in the day.  Bette was trying to get everything all set for the gallery opening the following weekend.  Everyone was going to be there.  She was nervous and excited at the same time.  But with Tina by her side, she knew everything would be more than great.  How long had it been since she had an art opening with someone at her side?  She felt that nothing had changed between her and Tina and here they were, years later, together again.  But when she stopped to think and reflect, she realized just how much things had actually changed.  She thought of Dakota and smiled as her stomach tightened and bubbled.  Never in her life had she been so concerned about what a child thought of her.  Instead of trying to look and act sophisticated, attractive and intelligent, she now focused on what it would be like to look through the eyes of a child.  None of those other things mattered to Dakota.  She wanted to be loved in physical ways… hugs and kisses.   She wanted a playmate she could trust, someone who was honest and loved her mother unquestionably.  Dakota didnt care about how much money Bette made, but she cared about how well she made brownies.

    1. Great another step on the way – it was waiting for. Adorable – Dakota is so sweet and Bette and Tina as so together, nice to read happy stuff.

    2. OK, that was a three Kleenex ending. *sniff, sniff* So innocently cute and sweet.

You are masterfully meldeding together small vignettes that are creating a larger and more lush picture. Beautiful.

    3. “We’re all living together. We’re a family” wow how long Bette has waited to hear those few sentences. Amazing you have brought me to tears and thanks for that.

PS – I, for one, hope that the trials and tribulations of moving in together with new jobs continue to inspire you to continue this drama. And of course, how are the rest of the gang surviving and reacquainting themselves with one another as well and Bette & Tina?
