    Vignettes: Chapter 70

Bette decided to work from home the next day. Tina suspected it had something to do with Dakota being next door all night, but she kept her thoughts to herself as she walked out the door. Bette sipped at her coffee and sat at the kitchen counter, reading the newspaper. Her attention span was short, though, as she continually glanced out the window to see if Dakota’s car was still in the driveway. She looked at her watch and saw that it was after ten. Willing to risk missing her daughter and abandon the stakeout, she headed to the bathroom to take a shower.

Pouring her second cup of coffee and starting to flip through the national newspaper, she began peering out the window again, clean and dressed. After eleven she finally realized she wasn’t getting any work down. Pushing the paper aside, she grabbed her laptop and dug out some paper work from her briefcase. She moved to the table where she had more space to spread out, but still kept a good view of Dakota’s car. Bette wondered what was going on. Hadn’t Dakota said she had to work today? She never missed work. Bette wondered if she should be worried, but then she pushed back those thoughts as she knew she needed to give her daughter her own privacy.

At one, Bette pushed back her chair was feeling confident about her work progress. She charged her cell phone as she practically ran it dead throughout the morning and she moved to the kitchen to grab some lunch. As she speared some melon on her fork and sprinkled basalmic vinagrette on her spinach and fruit salad, she heard the front door open. She assumed it was Alice because she usually stopped by for lunch on the days Bette worked from home.

“I’m in the kitchen!” Bette shouted.

“You don’t need to scream, I’m right here.”

Bette turned around, surprised, and smiled. “Shouldn’t you be at work?”

Dakota dug her hands deep in her jeans pockets and looked at the ground. “Yeah, well… I called off.”

Bette clutched her chest and pretended to be falling over. “Called off? Can it be true?”

    4. I think you captured Kody’s nervousness perfectly and seeing Bette reassure in such an easy manner shows the close relationship these two have. Once again, another great chapter from one of my favorite authors. Thanks!

    5. Simply fantastic as always fareast! Wonderful dialogue b/w Bette and Kody. Thanks for the great chapter! Looking forward to the next one! Thanks again for taking the time to write this story oh and …. I so want to know what is on that tape!!!*** Smiles to you ***

    6. i guess kody get’s tina’s genes LOL, it was cute, at least she can totally talk to both mamas about it…alice is funny, freaking out on a phone LOL

    7. Fareast,Another worthy and wonderful addition to this marvelous and magnificent masterpiece. The way that you capture life and drawn out all of the emotions and feelings is beautiful. You manage to do this is a very simple and delightful fashion which belies the effort involved.Bette and ‘Kody’s conversation was realistic and honest. Theirs is an open relationship built on trust and respect. Admitting things that you think you have hidden to your parent is part of life. And as in life, most of the time they already knew or at least suspected it.This often shocks you more than the original point.Thank you.Your Loyal Fan.

    8. wonderful story i like it–i have a 25 yr old daughter too-who is married and has a litttle boy 7 yr and live next door to us–can;t wait fore next episodes

    9. I could feel Bette’s restlessness as she watched for Dakota. With just a few choice words you conveyed the passage of time perfectly. It was if you wanted to watch the clock along with Bette.Dakota’s nervousness was palpable, the heightened sense of vulnerability, her quickened heart beat and the blush that exploded each time she was embarrassed. Nicely done. It’s never easy to talk to your parents about a relationship, especially when it’s obvious that you have been sexually active. Bette handled it quite deftly, giving her enough time to work out the path to communication herself, yet prodded when necessary. I loved the gaydar comment! It will be interesting to hear Tina’s side of things when she talks to Dakota. She may be able to offer insights to Dakota that she never told Bette. Engaging as always.
