When the Day Leaves You, 9

Tina boarded the plane and immediately closed her eyes the minute she hit the seat. A larger, heavy set man eventually sat next to her and smiled before leafing through a magazine. She opened the window to watch the bend of the horizon on take off, and drifted into a long, overdue sleep.

A few hours later her eyes opened slowly to Bette sitting next to her. “Good morning.” Tina quickly sat forward and looking around, said, “Where is the guy that was sitting here?” Bette smiled, “I paid him a hundred dollars to switch seats with me. He seemed more than happy to get away from the ‘snorer’.”

“You’re such a liar—and for the record, you’re just like your friend Alice, I swear to god…”

    “My…friend Alice?” Bette sneered.

“Yes, this is something she’d do…”

Bette reclined in her chair and crossing her legs in Tina’s direction, said, “Well, as a matter of fact, if you must know, she’s the one that got me the ticket on such short notice.”

“You don’t say,” Tina said, before shaking her head, “Unbelievable,” and staring back out the window. Reaching over, Bette slammed it shut. “Well, if you refuse to talk to me, you really leave me no choice.”

Tina waited and collected herself before responding. “You know, this only gets harder—it doesn’t get easier from here. You walked out on me the other night because I didn’t want to talk about it. I can’t help but wonder–when and why will you walk out next,” Tina shrugged, “God only knows.”

“You’re shunning me because of that ridiculous argument?”

“No, not the argument,” Tina scoffed, “how you chose to handle the argument…”

“I’m sorry, I got scared,” Bette said, without hesitation. “Do have any idea what you’ve come to mean to me, over these last few weeks, you’ve…” Bette shook her head and looked down at her lap, as Tina struggled to listen.

    “You’ve—what?”

“You’ve—come to mean the world to me; I care for you very deeply. I want you with me no matter what the circumstances, and if I get scared—well, I can assure you, I’d never leave for very long, that I can promise.”

    1. Whoa, I’m with Bette, I’d want to try. This is a fabulous story, but remember….don’t kill off Tina. We need a survivor not another casualty like Dana. Can’t wait for your next update!

    2. I am with Janbear heartwarming and heartbreaking. It’s heartwarming that Bette and Tina have found one another. However, breaking my heart that Tina has given up.

    3. hey bette should try… you never know… and tina should never give up… every day new things are being discovered… maybe bette will be the match her body doesn’t reject… PPS

    4. Great chapter, but hell no any chance at beating this thing is worth taking. I know Tina doesn’t want Bette going through all the pain of being tested because of the slim chance of a match. But even a slim chance is better than none at all. Please let her think it over and give Bette the opportunity to help if she can. PPS

    5. I think your portrayal of Tina in this chapter is so scared of trying again she’d rather live the rest of her journey in acceptance. And u will find me the reader hoping that you the writer will get Bette to change her mind and try again. PPS!!! Tina has great taste in your story…sweet hotel!!!
