When You Least Expect It – Chapter 12

    "What’s this about?"

Now Alice was nervous, all her confidence simply falling away from her body.

    "Um . . Well . . Nothing, I was just asking"

"Alice" Tina warned, her insides completely calm and collected. Alice had been right, the last few months between herself and Bette had been perfect. The blonde had no reason to feel worried about whatever Alice had to say but she was still curious.

"Okay fine" Alice sighed with defeat and looked at Tina with worry in her eyes, "Yesterday I saw Bette and Jan hanging out together at The Planet"

"Oh" Tina shook her head as she went back to reach for the box of oatmeal, "They’re working on setting up their latest show"

"But doesn’t Jan usually do that stuff from home?" Alice nodded when Tina gestured to pass her a box of oatmeal, "I mean that’s what she’s been doing for months"

"Yeah but she and Bette had a talk not too long ago. She went back to work at the gallery last month"

"And you’re okay with that?" Alice asked with her own eyebrow raised in question as they made their way toward the baby aisle.

Tina shrugged a single shoulder as she nodded, "Yeah. I mean, I don’t want to be the one to tell Bette who she can and cannot talk to. She’s never given me a reason not to trust her and to be honest, I just don’t want to bring my baggage from my relationship with Kevin into my relationship with Bette. It’s taken us way too long to reach this point for me to ruin it with insecurities"

Alice nodded as she reached for two separate jars of baby food and examined them carefully, "Just be careful. I love Jan and she’s been my friend forever but she can be a little . . sneaky"

Tina sighed and leaned on her cart, "I know but I think these last couple months have really changed her. I think she’s finally accepted that Bette will never want to be with her"

"Maybe" Alice said thoughtfully as she grabbed a couple jars of baby food. Tina placed a hand on her friend’s shoulder and flashed a soft smile, thanking Alice for her concern.
