-two weeks before-
Being in the closet for all of her life was something she has gotten used to, but facing every day with the prospect of living for who she is was new, promising, adventurous and, exciting and yet somehow scary.
But confronting the truth, here she was:
Dana Fairbanks, 32 years old, successful tennis player with sponsors, fans and nowadays women at her feet, dying to get every scrape of life she was willing to share with them or give away to them.
Two things though remained unspoken to the press or in general the outside world:
Her family never accepted her for who she is. Personally, she did not care that much about what her parents thought of her, but she would give a lot to have her brother back in her life again. Howie had to stay away from her after Dana came out to them until he did not tend to continue the rare contact with her anymore. Truth be told, it was very hard since she no longer lived in Los Angeles but moved to Miami seven years ago.
The other thing still stings like a blow in the face, still stabs at her heart. But than again, how could that be, since she does not own her heart and soul anymore, giving it away the day she met the blonde for an interview at a café in West Hollywood. How can it be, that things that seem so right turn out so wrong? Why did this happen to her, Dana asked herself for a million times now. Not only this morning, but every night that she would return home, exhausted from a long day spent in practice. When she would open the front door to her apartment and feels the silence creeping under her skin making her shiver. Eating some light dish for dinner, zapping through channels and heading towards a bed empty and cold, where she would finally hurl up into a corner and pray in her mind that this time she would fall asleep without tears running down her face. Before too long the alarm clock goes off, indicating that life still moves on, even though it has literally stopped one night seven years ago.
Partying all night long, sleeping in the next day and eventually waking up in the arms of a great lover. Yup, life cannot get any better, Alice thought. She made herself a name in the journalist factory, where they either make you or break you. With being smart, witty, loud and most of the time very nosy she got herself into a chair, where other people had to dance after her drill, which was not that bad afterall. Her circle of friends is the one that everybody asks and wishes for. They are truthful, fun and caring. They became her family, her haven and her runawaypoint, when things would tense up to get nasty. She caught herself counting the joyful attributes in her life, as she randomly does in the quit peace of the morning, when the spouse for a night already left.
Though she knew why she did it, she chose to once again ignore it, the missing piece to the perfect picture she was creating. How dare she did it, leaving just like that and how dare her, sneaking up in her mind on a day that was supposed to be a highlight, as she was trying to make them every day ever since. Pushing down the welling feelings Alice jumped up to get into the shower and over to the Planet to receive her fuel for the day.
