Would She? Part 7
Previously
The crisp black linen suit she’d donned that morning was creased and so badly wrinkled it looked as if she’d had slept in it. The oil from her skin had sucked up the little makeup she’d applied that morning.
There were remains of the natural-colored lipstick she favored trapped inside the creases in her lips, and circles beneath her eyes from the mascara that had been caught in the on-again, off-again tears she’d cried.
One man asked if she was ill while the other guard smiled smugly and tilted his hand to his mouth in a drinking motion.
“Spent a little too much time at the bar, did we?”
No, she wasn’t ill or drunk; she was just confused and hurt.
“Sorry,” she’d mumbled at them, and shuffled around them and toward the sign that said EXIT-GROUND TRANSPORTATION AND BAGGAGE CLAIM.
PART 7
HENRY
Like every new year’s eve before that, Henry found himself surrounded by family, a little less than sober, wearing a colorful, pointed paper hat, his lips moving from plastic horn to Hennessy-filled plastic cup in short intervals, his ears filled with the sound of music, conversation and laughter.
This was the first year in over twenty some years, he was back home alone. Alone without Tina: without the kids. Leaving Tina was the hardest and the toughest thing he had done. But it was very necessary.
Everything had been done just so, in order to secure good luck, and fortune in the New Year.
He wondered as he wandered through the crowd of relatives if this would be the year that the dreams would stop and the voice would die.
Would this be the year the fear and uneasiness that had settled itself on him like a second skin was finally shed? He was an older man, but he still got the sweats and shakes whenever he had to go down into that basement.
The chair was still there and the small table next to it. The twin bed frame, skeletal without the mattress, had been propped upright against the wall.
Henry would stand there, trying to catch his breath and keep the sweat out of his eyes, but his hands would shake and his lips tremble, and he had to fight with everything in him to keep from running back up the stairs.

Sometime you can give and give and its like soitting into the wind, come back at you. You wipe it off and come back to fight another day. I hope this is what our ladies are doing. They are ready to fight another day but together. thanks
The word is spitting thanks
John? Could he be Henry’s father or brother? And what’s up with Henry’s fear of the basement? He seems almost like a man who was abused as a child. So many questions which I’m sure you’ll answer along the way. As for giving yourself and it still not being enough, just remember you can’t get blood from a turnip.
great longer now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sorry you are having a rough day. I know the feeling of giving and giving and it not being enough to some. After you’ve done all you can for others you have to let go and do you. Look out for yourself…it’s okay to be a little for self sometime. Keep your head up. I like the fact that Angelica is going with Tina please let them run into Bette. Yes I agree with the person who said sounded like he was abused (or could he be gay and never admitted it?) I am curious…hope your day gets better.
U know when I first this was a little insight on Henry I was like “Fuck Henry” I don’t want to know his, but as I read I can see where u are going. Please hurry and let Bette and Tina and Bette and Angelica reconnect and meet. ALSO, there is nothing left to give to someone or something that do not deserve it, but to take the mutulate parts and stumble away and heal and LOVE YOURSELF!!
you story telling contines to amaze me..I look forward to seeing where you take Henry…and I hope Tina can pick herself up…as well as Bette! Keep up the good work! Can’t wait for more!
Sorry you’ve had a hard day, baby! Hmmm…this an go in a lot of direction with this new insight of Henry! It was really cold of him to leave Tina the way he did. Can’t wait to hear the explanation. So much discontent all around–sad. And whassup with “Penguins”? Can’t wait for your next post because this story is great!
Interesting chapter. Thank you for posting even when you feel you have nothing left. Just remember…although you have given both arms and legs…you still have your heart, and your mind. With those, you can do anything. :)
WOW… I THINK SOMETHING HAPPENED TO HENRY IN THAT BASEMENT… but now i do hope bette runs into tina and angelica… i think they both suffered enough… hope your day gets better… please continue soon
I know many of you didnt want to read about Henry’s story, but his story is important to understanding Tina’s and his relationship….And his relationship with Angelica.
Penguins? Is it b/c penguins are monogamous and mate for life? They usually hatch one egg at a time. Both parents share in the incubation. Great story with complexity. Remember to leave something for yourself.
I just caught up. This is a great story!!! Thanks for bringing it back! Wow, that’s going to be quite the reunion on the beach!
I understand completely about giving and it still not being enough. I wish I had something better to say than “I understand,” but there really isn’t any advice for something like that. All I’ve got it this story is under my skin, I love it, and it’s a pleasure to re-read it.
You are writing a truly creative and wonderful story – and doing this while you are in your own turmoil is quite an accomplishment. Sometimes giving your everything is what you have to do for you even when it won’t change the situation or the other person. Be kind to yourself as you reflect on what all your actions and your desires mean – this takes time and patience and lots and lots of self compassion. Best wishes to you in your process.
If you’ve given them your arms and legs and they still don’t appreciate it, then I say…get your limbs back! and maybe use one to flick them on the foreheads. As for the story, I give my thumb of approval. and despite whatever people have to say about Henry, I totally appreciate character development!! It’s too much work for me to think and analyze sometimes :x and, uh, penguins? You want Bette and Tina to be reborn as penguins? (see, I’m not very good in the thinking department :( )
Something definitly happened to Henry in that basement, and it wasn’t good. I’m with the others though about hoping that Bette, Tina, and Angelica meet up in Jamacia, hey I think they should be staying at the same resort. Lets also hope Bette brought the photo album and letters along. Destiny cannot be changed, it may take a while to get there, but what is to be will be regardless of time. As much as Candace and Henry both loved Tina and Bette, its kinda sad that they always lived with the knowledge that the two still and always would love each other.
I was going to wait til you posted the next chapter t leave my comment, but this chapter changed my mind. As much as I dislike Henry, reading this made me feel sorry for him, and that’s not something I normally do in Henry’s case. I was never really interested in knowing whether he had a story of his own to tell, but this chapter makes me want to know more about him. As in life, whatever fears the basement holds is part of why he is the man he is today. Based on what I have gathered, being with Tina allowed him to lay to rest SOME of his fear, but not enough. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t get the sense that Henry was abused in that basement; looking forward to you revealing all in the slow way that you do. I love you Baby!!
I’m not sure what’s happening with Henry, but I want to know everything about it. Every persons life is worth that someone writes a book about it. I really love this story.
Thank you so much for the post…..hope you give us more soon.
This is such a fine story and from reading it there’s no way to tell you weren’t feeling up to par. It meets your high standards. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.
