This past Monday Night, Gotham premiered on Fox with its first episode beginning the narrative of practically every origin story related to Gotham City of DC Comics, most notably young Bruce Wayne, who shall one day grow up to become Batman.
Many characters were introduced, but the main focus here isn’t on the young Selina “Would-Be Catwoman” Kyle, Harvey Bullock, or even the young girl named Ivy, destined to become Poison Ivy. This isn’t about the possible first Joker sighting in the form of the standup comedian who looks to impress Fish Mooney. This isn’t even about Fish Mooney and her aspirations for ruling Gotham City’s underworld.
The main focus here is on a couple of characters that received a little bit of attention. One is Barbara Kean, the fiancee of Detective Jim Gordon. The other is Renee Montoya, a Detective that, like Gordon is also part of the Gotham City Police Department.
In the comic books, Renee is established as a lesbian and it appears that she will also be one in this television series, making her a landmark character on the TV side of the Batman mythos. In one of the scenes, Renee and Barbara have a brief conversation that heavily implies a past relationship between the two. If so, then this one moment should be the start of a slowly, but surely building subplot as it involves both Renee and Barbara’s background. Also, if the two were romantically involved as the scene from the Pilot episode suggests, then this would make the would-be mother of the future Batgirl a bisexual which would also make her a landmark character in a manner similar to Renee.
This is rather groundbreaking for Batman and comic related TV/Cinema fans in general, but it is only the first episode. Whatever the deal is between Renee and Barbara, we here at LesFan will be waiting to find out. Same LesFan-Time. Same LesFan-Channel.
