Leisha Hailey was kicked off a Southwest Air flight today for kissing her girlfriend. Hailey says the flight attendant said “This is a ‘family’ airline.
Leisha is now demanding a public apology from Southwest — calling for her fans, and gay people everywhere, to boycott the airline for its “homophobic” policies, writing, “They don’t like us.”
A rep for Southwest tweeted her back with a quick apology — asking for Leisha to contact the company privately so they can sort out a solution. So far, no official word from Southwest.
“We didn’t know intolerance and discrimination for slouchy pants, being overweight or being gay was part of your family values,” @UhHuhHerMusic continued. Hailey and fashion designer Nina Garduno have been a couple since 2006. Uh Huh Her was referring to others kicked off Southwest – for wearing the “wrong” clothes (Billie Jo Armstrong of Green Day, no less!) and being overweight.
In an online response to the original @UhHuhHerMusic tweet, a Southwest rep said via Twitter, “I’m so sorry! Can you please follow/DM [direct message] me more details so we can get to the bottom of this? Thanks!” Direct messages on Twitter are private; no public messages between the parties had gone up by 2 p.m. PST, though Southwest, whose reps were in an all-day off-site meeting Monday, had a response in the works.
Hailey continued on her own feed, saying over the course of several tweets: “This is an outrage. I demand a public apology by @SouthwestAir and a refund. Hate is not a family value. I will never fly this airline. We were escorted off the plane for getting upset about the issue. @SouthwestAir endorses homophobic employees. No one made her accountable.”
“Since when is showing affection towards someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers as ‘family.’ ” She continued: “I know plenty of wonderful same sex families I would like to introduce them to. Boycott @SouthwestAir if you are gay. They don’t like us.”
Hailey did fire one more shot at the airline around 1 p.m., which she requested her followers to retweet: “Did I mention to @SouthwestAir that I have a lot of their actions recorded on audio and video?” The message also included a call to boycott the airline.
