Bette thought it best not to pursue this line of questioning. She asked questions for a living and Tina was quite right she’d fallen in to a trap usually reserved for novices. One should always be sure of the answer before asking a question. Still, she was back in Tina’s good books and was determined to stay there.
They had no difficulty in getting a black cab. “Scotland Yard, please driver.” Said Bette.
“Well Tina you have been so very patient with me, I suppose I should spill the beans.” Bette cleared her throat but before she could speak the cab driver interrupted.
“You’ll never guess who I had in the back of me cab the other day? Nicole Kidman and that’s a fact. And if you don’t mind me saying miss you’ve really got the look of that Jennifer Beals you know her in that film Flashdance. She must be getting on a bit now.” He mused.
“Mmm how interesting.” said Bette huffily. “Now if you don’t mind we need to prepare for our meeting.” and with that she reached forward and slid the glass partition that separated them from the driver shut resolutely.
“Well I think Jennifer Beals looks great for her age.” Tina said teasingly.
“That’s as may be but I’m only 32 and she’s really not that much older” Said a somewhat offended and dejected Bette.
“Come on Bette the driver was trying to pay you a compliment and J.B’s hot! Now what were you going to tell me about our mission to Scotland Yard?” asked Tina trying to lift Bette’s spirits.
“Well! Hot eh?” Bette remarked to some extent mollified with Tina’s attempt to massage her bruised ego. “Do you recall the case of Carmen Hallstead?” Tina nodded her assent. This had been a cause celebre about 3 years ago which Tina had followed avidly in the press and indeed had read the transcripts of the trial. Bette continued, “Then as you well know she was charged and convicted of murdering her millionaire husband Peter Hallstead but the evidence was all circumstantial, it didn’t help her case that she refused to go in to the witness box and give evidence and also the case was tried in front of that misogynist Lord Justice Cheeseman whose summing up was so flawed. Both Dana Fairbanks her solicitor and I felt we would have had a good chance of getting the conviction overturned on appeal but Carmen wouldn’t have it, she just kept saying it was her fault and that she must accept the punishment. In fact she’s rejected all our attempts at contact and refused to see us.”

Love the story, I enjoy the way you have incorporated, the shady underworld of London. Poor Bette has nearly had a heart attack, she has seen Tina in her bikini, keep up the great story, please post your next chapter soon.

Of course Bette is in trouble… was there ever any question about that. ;) I can’t wait for your description of Tina in her swim suit though… and please don’t forget to do the same for Bette. Your story has a bit of everything in it for us; A little intrigue, a mixture of social class and education, obnoxious men and wonderful London.

When Tina said the worst answer is a ‘no’, I was reminded of the 6th episode of . But luckily Tina’s answer is ‘yes’.Being a lawyer is a good reason why Bette doesn’t open up easily.
