Her dark curly hair is barely visible over the mounds of paperwork. There is little hope of finishing tonight. She didn’t relish the thought of spending all of tomorrow in her office. She had gotten use to working the front on Sundays. Couples that would stroll along boulevard would stop into browse. They seldom bought anything but it was a great opportunity to people watch. If she thought about this need a little more she would discover that she longed to be one of those couples that window shopped and ate in cafes on Sundays. The chirping of her cell phone pulls her out of fantasy land.

    “Bette Porter”

“You better be on your way out that door.”

“No, Al. I need another thirty minutes or so.”

“You should not entertain any notions of standing us up. I know where you live!”

    “I am hanging up now.”

She puts the phone down on the desk and raises both hands to her temples. She gently applies pressure and starts to move her fingers in tiny circles.

She knew that Alice meant well but she was driving her insane. At this very moment she was intensely wishing she had not agreed to go out with them tonight. She opened her eyes to study the stack of papers that was not getting any smaller. She had a full plate. Her fledging gallery had only been in business six months but it was getting to be too much for Bette to handle alone. Two weeks ago she hired someone to take care of the front part time. She desperately needed to work three more hours then go to bed. What she didn’t need to was to go to some bar and end up in someone else’s bed.

    Beep.

“Damn it Alice leave me alone,” she yells at the cell phone. She tries to ignore the phone but loses the internal struggle. “Fine,” she opens the text message.

Are u going 2 give me back my earrings?

Bette reads the unfamiliar number again racking her brain as to whom this was. It was definitely not someone she knew. She tossed the phone on the nearest pile of paper, going back to work. By this time her mind would not focus she kept reading the same line over and over again.

    1. Well done V-nothing to scold you about, thanks, not a role I’m comfortable with. Unique beginnig, which I appreciate. Kids these days with their texting!

    2. Talking to a stranger until the sun comes up and making a connection in the process…yep I’ve been there. Even funnier is it started as a mistake much like Tina dialing the wrong number. Tina calling Bette a dick is still cracking me up. LOL Can’t wait to see how this ends!

    3. To be honoust.. when I saw it I thought: “oh no.. not another B&T story…” But nothing was on tv here in Holland, and I thought.. well lets read this story! But I like it very much!! Wow, they will have a high phone-bill btw!! Especially Tina, cause they’ve phoned all night…. But well… money is no issue in this lovestories :-p

    4. That was SOOOOOO wonderful and so sweet…..you definitely have to write more than 2 chapters…..I love this story already……do I have to beg???? LOL
