"I don’t know how long we laid like that, but I haven’t felt that much grief and sorrow, and happiness mixed together all at once before. It was a little disconcerting."
"Well let’s start with the grief first. You haven’t ever really taken the time to grieve over the loss of your son, especially not with Tina. You told me you wanted to be strong for her, so you couldn’t let yourself at that time. That denial of feeling led you to certain acts that were out of character for you and that you strongly, and from what you have told me, you adamantly opposed."
"That still isn’t an excuse for what I did."
"No, it’s not. But Bette, it is a valid reason. There is a difference. People deal with things in very different manners, in all kinds of situations. For instance, a child who loses their parent at a young age, can take many paths in growing up with that loss. I have seen everything from, classic over achievers, to kids who give up and go on killing sprees at a very young age."
"Isn’t that a little dramatic Doctor? I mean it is quite a leap from losing a parent to killing someone."
"Is it really Bette? What did you do when your mother died?"
"I, well, I uh,….."
"Exactly, you put all of your hurt, and feelings of abandonment, and sorrow over the death of her, into becoming as you once told me, "The child any parent would love to have" You excelled in academia, your behavior was impeccable, you were respectful, and obedient to your father. Why do you think you did those things Bette?"
"Because it was expected of me. My father had very high expectations."
"Or, if you look at another way, was it so he wouldn’t leave you as well? Had you ever felt responsible for your mother dying? Did you ever for even one slight moment think to yourself as a child, oh if only I was better behaved, or listened better or got better grades, maybe my mom wouldn’t have died?"
Bette sat still as the memory of losing her mother came to her. The pain of it, the loss, the hurt. Somewhere inside, a 5 year old Bette cried for her mama. The adult Bette, let the few stray tears meander down her cheeks, and when she looked at her therapist again she silently nodded her head to affirm her questions.

Oh wow I am overwhelmed by the praise…let me say this publicly…I recall when I was a newbie and very unsure about my ability to express myself…many of you, if not all of you, came out to support my fledgling efforts and one of you even told me when my writing had improved…my memory is not that brilliant so I won’t name names here. So thank you all and especially thank you cdngrl because I loved your stories ‘first’ and then progressed to others. This update is great, I’m seeing some hope in the relationship and some gentle love…bring it on…when you can post and my humble thanks.
Congrats on making it to chapter 24. I am glad that you have made it this far. This story is so inspirational. It gives one hope of not giving up and going after what is important to you.

Hey CDNGrl, I just love the tenderness between Bette and Tina in this awespme adventure. The gals seems to be taking time to heal and decide what they really want. A family together, I hope. Many thanks fof this great gift. Your Loyal Fan.
Great update. Good to see Bette facing and realizing she’s only human. Family day at the beach seems like a great step forward to me, especially if Tina and Bette are wearing bikinis.
