    Tibette beginning… She had waited, her heart beating furiously in anticipation, as she had listened to the never-ending ringing tone into the phone. No answer… She’d let out a long sigh and was just about to hang up when…

    CHAPTER 21
     
     

     
    She was on a plane again.
     

    But this time, the 727 she had boarded a couple of hours ago was on its way to Santa Maria, the small Capital of the Republic of Santaragua. In a few hours, she would be at the heart of the dreadful disease she had been researching for so many months. So many years. She was supposed to meet a correspondent of the Pasteur Institute there, who would give her the latest update on the situation and guide her through the country. She would usually always find a certain excitement in doing these research expeditions, in spite of the death tragedy often involved… It was her work. The passion of her life…
     

    ‘Hello?…’ The sweet sound of the angelic voice resounded in her head… Sending a blow straight into her heart.
     

    But this time, as she started another of those expeditions, there was no excitement. No thrill. All she wanted was to get to work as soon as she could, and eradicate this killer disease. She would fight it with all her might. She would fight it because she could. She would fight it because at least she had a little chance to change the course of its destiny. To save thousands of people… 
     

    … Since she couldn’t save herself.
     

    Bette closed her eyes.
     

    Five days…
     

    It had been five days since she had left Walheim. Five days since she had left her…
     

    And those had been the longest five days of her life.
     

    After their painful separation at the airport, things had gone very fast. In just a few hours, she had been at Shane’s bedside. The young woman had a few bruises and her head injury was a major concern, but other than that, she was in one piece. Bette had called Carmen from the hospital. She didn’t want to worry the young woman, but she knew that she had to let her know. Hell, had it been Tina, she would have wante…
     

    Bette quickly dismissed the thought…
     

    She had tried to alleviate Carmen’s fears regarding Shane’s condition, and had promised to call her soon with an update. A few hours later, to everyone’s relief, Shane had woken up. She was shaken up and very weak, but after a number of tests, the doctors’ diagnostic had been very positive. She would be on her feet in no time. 
     

    Bette had spent the next couple of days with her. Until Shane had practically thrown her out of the hospital, reassuring her that she would be okay, and ordering her to carry on with her travelling plans. The last thing the young woman wanted was to send her friend to the heart of an epidemic, but she also knew how essential this trip was to Bette and to her research.

    9. wow such a long and well written update. I enjoyed it so. Well I see we have Tina attempting to be a mature adult, instead of cheating on Helena she wants to tell her how she feels first…so do it already and go to Bette.

    15. Okay, they have fallen in love with each other and are not even in the same country, what is the next step? I hope that the survive this time away from each other. It also gives Tina some time to end her marriage to Helena.

Well, actually… Actually, I can certainly see why she would do that, she just wasn’t ready to face the consequences of such a revelation, but at the same time she desperately needed to say those words to Tina for somehow it must be a relief for her… But how could she leave Tina like that ? With those words ?… This is so heartwrenching, no to mention excruciating ! … Anyway, off to read your last update now !
