Bike Ride, Life Ride – Chapter 38

Tina exhaled heavily before she answered Bette.  She knew that at this very moment, she didn’t want Bette to keep this baby. Although she loved children, she was not in love with the idea of Bette having a baby under the present circumstances. She thought that if they had more children, they would be invested in so many ways that they are not able to be now. She thought she would have more choices. She never even considered Bette carrying a baby, she had always assumed it would be her, which is why they needed to discuss things much more before they should parent together again.  Although she felt guilty about it, she wanted to have some time back with just Bette and Angie, she didn’t want to share Bette’s mind and body with a baby. And she did not want to deal with all the complications Jodie Lerner would cause. No doubt, this would not be some cut and dry thing.  She also felt really fearful that Bette’s body was not ready for this right now and she had quite a bit of healing to do.  Still, she wanted to spend a lifetime with Bette Porter and in the end she was a staunch feminist that believed this decision had to be Bette’s.

Bette rubbed her knee and said “A penny for your thoughts Tee?”

Tina said “I have so many…”

Bette said “Just start slowly and let’s work through them. I know that together we can make the right decision for us”.

Tina said “Bette that is just it. I just really don’t believe that I have a right to any decision making here. This is your body. I believe so strongly in women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose. I don’t want to take that away from you…”

Bette said “Tina, you do have a right to make a decision here, you are my partner. This happened to us, we did not choose it, but we can choose how it plays out. We can make the decision that is right for us together, as a couple and as a family. Please tell me what you are thinking….”

Tina said “Bette, I am afraid of how you will react to some of my feelings and thoughts. Some of them surprise me and make me feel guilty and horrible”.

    1. Well, my mind has been changed, at first I thought, keep the baby, they could love this baby because it was an innocent child. But now after reading the concerns of Tina, and yet still believing that it was Bette’s decision and she would stand by her no matter what,I feel that sadly an abortion is the right thing to do for them as a couple and family at this time. Just my two cents worth.

    2. I love seeing how honest Tina has been with Bette concerning the baby, Bette’s health and re-building their relationship. The assurances of love and lack of pressure from Tina will go a long way in helping Bette make that right decision. I hope Bette will decide not to keep the baby. Bette and Tina’s baby should be a product of their love.

    3. Haven’t yet read the story but I will after I write this. You asked for last minute advice. I have no advice but I do have a question. “What would you do if you were raped by an ex, whether male or female and impregnated by them and not your choice. What would you do, would you want to carry a child that would remind you everyday of how that child was formed? I wouldn’t. No matter what I think of pro life. I would not want that fetus within my body, not knowing where the sperm came from and knowing the evil intent of the rapist I surely wouldn’t want to carry that fetus under any circumstances. There is nothing that would ever make it alright.

    4. Something that I didn’t mention in my first note. Don’t impose your beliefs on the characters, let the characters lead you, and believe me they will. Let the character make the choice and you are off the hook. At least they had a chance to talk to each other and get other information from the doctor and with this additional knowledge, the answer is easy. Abortion. Bette sounds as though she has already made the decision to have an abortion, she just wanted to know what Tina was thinking. I wouldn’t have to wonder about it. Get it the hell out of my body. Thanks for posting.

    5. My recollection of the details may be fuzzy because I read your story the first time you posted and I just picked it up from the continuation but just based on the fact that a few days prior to finding out she is pregnant Bette was in fear of leaving the hotel room because she didn’t want to chance running into Jodi and based on the fact that she hasn’t effectively dealt with the rape by her ex-lover I would suggest that Bette face Jodi before making her decision to keep this baby if that is what she is thinking. If she can face her rapist and confront her and tell her that she will overlook the hatred that resulted in this violation and only remember their love and accept this baby as a part of her that she will cherish and never resent because of how it came into being then I say keep it. I agree with Dainty let the characters and the circumstances guide the decision not everyone’s opinion or personal beliefs. Tina has been honest and I can appreciate that she wants to stand by her woman no matter what – but she too needs to deal with her feelings about Jodi – whether or not Jodi is in their lives physically or the fact that she didn’t produce the sperm will not take away the reality that Bette is carrying Jodi’s baby. If they can deal with that then go for it, otherwise take everyone and everything including the baby into consideration – the decision will be made obvious.

    6. What a terrible position Jodie has put Bette and Tina in. How do you make this decision. I believe in a woman’s right to choose what is in her best interest. I think in this instance, Bette needs to decide what is best for her life as it is right now. How will she heal in these conditions? How will she and Tina be able to accept a child of rape? Right now, physically and emotionally, I think Bette needs to terminate this pregnancy.
