Bike Ride, Life Ride – Chapter 38

Bette said “Tina, that does not make you a bad person. This is hardly an ideal circumstance. I want to know what you are thinking and feeling, even your fears and I appreciate you being forward, it really does help me.”

Bette picked up Tina’s hand and played with it, she intertwined her fingers in her hand and brought it up to her mouth to kiss.  Bette kissed Tina on the forehead and smoothed down her hair.  She petted her head and tucked her hair behind her ear. She cuddled up to the back of her and squeezed her gently from behind.

Tina whispered “Bette? Are you disappointed in me?”

Bette said quietly back to her “No, I love you Tina. I love you so much. And I thank you for being honest with me. Really, communicating like this, the hard and the ugly stuff, this is why we were broken before and this is why we won’t ever be in that place with one another again”.

Tina said “Bette I just feel like I am pushing you and while I do have an opinion and I really appreciate you letting me voice my concerns, fears and feelings, I also want to be really clear that if you choose to have this baby I will also be there for you one hundred percent of the way. I will love you and support you and I will love this baby as well.  We will find the way to make it work and get through any hurdles that we need to together. I don’t in any way want you to think I have given you an ultimatum and my love for you does is not dependant on you doing what I want, ok?”

Bette said “Thanks for saying that T”.

Dr. Miller knocked on the door and entered the room. He somberly padded up to the bed.  Bette explained in detail the prior events that happened so that he would be filled in. After hearing the story he exhaled heavily and said “I assume you have had a chance to talk with another?”

    Bette nodded affirmative.

Dr. Miller said “Have you come to any decisions?”

Bette said “Can I have until the morning?”

Dr. Miller said that it was fine to wait until morning. Tina proceeded to ask some questions about medications and drugs that Bette had already taken before she knew she was pregnant and what effect they might have had. Dr. Miller said he honestly did not know and explained the drug classes and that several were not recommended for pregnant women. He explained the risk factors of such medicine on fetal development and also explained what future recovery would like pregnant or not.  He also explained the procedure for abortion, should they choose that option. Bette and Tina both took in all the information and didn’t say much to Dr. Miller or each other.  After all their questions were answered he left the room.

Tina said “Do you want to talk some more about this and what we just learned?”

Bette said “Not really. I think I just want to go to sleep and think about all of this. It is a lot to take in”.

Tina nodded and they settled into bed with each other. With the lights dim and the girls exhausted, Tina took the wheel this time and held Bette tightly. There were a million things she could say, but she thought she needed to honor Bette’s space and her silence. Tina said what she had to say, she voiced her fears and concerns and she voiced her support. Now, she had to stand by the commitment to leave this decision up to Bette.

    She said “Bette?”

    Bette said “Yeah?”

Tina said “I love you. I just want you to know that. You don’t have to say anything else, just please fall asleep tonight knowing that I love you.”

    Bette said “Thank you Tina”.

    1. Well, my mind has been changed, at first I thought, keep the baby, they could love this baby because it was an innocent child. But now after reading the concerns of Tina, and yet still believing that it was Bette’s decision and she would stand by her no matter what,I feel that sadly an abortion is the right thing to do for them as a couple and family at this time. Just my two cents worth.

    2. I love seeing how honest Tina has been with Bette concerning the baby, Bette’s health and re-building their relationship. The assurances of love and lack of pressure from Tina will go a long way in helping Bette make that right decision. I hope Bette will decide not to keep the baby. Bette and Tina’s baby should be a product of their love.

    3. Haven’t yet read the story but I will after I write this. You asked for last minute advice. I have no advice but I do have a question. “What would you do if you were raped by an ex, whether male or female and impregnated by them and not your choice. What would you do, would you want to carry a child that would remind you everyday of how that child was formed? I wouldn’t. No matter what I think of pro life. I would not want that fetus within my body, not knowing where the sperm came from and knowing the evil intent of the rapist I surely wouldn’t want to carry that fetus under any circumstances. There is nothing that would ever make it alright.

    4. Something that I didn’t mention in my first note. Don’t impose your beliefs on the characters, let the characters lead you, and believe me they will. Let the character make the choice and you are off the hook. At least they had a chance to talk to each other and get other information from the doctor and with this additional knowledge, the answer is easy. Abortion. Bette sounds as though she has already made the decision to have an abortion, she just wanted to know what Tina was thinking. I wouldn’t have to wonder about it. Get it the hell out of my body. Thanks for posting.

    5. My recollection of the details may be fuzzy because I read your story the first time you posted and I just picked it up from the continuation but just based on the fact that a few days prior to finding out she is pregnant Bette was in fear of leaving the hotel room because she didn’t want to chance running into Jodi and based on the fact that she hasn’t effectively dealt with the rape by her ex-lover I would suggest that Bette face Jodi before making her decision to keep this baby if that is what she is thinking. If she can face her rapist and confront her and tell her that she will overlook the hatred that resulted in this violation and only remember their love and accept this baby as a part of her that she will cherish and never resent because of how it came into being then I say keep it. I agree with Dainty let the characters and the circumstances guide the decision not everyone’s opinion or personal beliefs. Tina has been honest and I can appreciate that she wants to stand by her woman no matter what – but she too needs to deal with her feelings about Jodi – whether or not Jodi is in their lives physically or the fact that she didn’t produce the sperm will not take away the reality that Bette is carrying Jodi’s baby. If they can deal with that then go for it, otherwise take everyone and everything including the baby into consideration – the decision will be made obvious.

    6. What a terrible position Jodie has put Bette and Tina in. How do you make this decision. I believe in a woman’s right to choose what is in her best interest. I think in this instance, Bette needs to decide what is best for her life as it is right now. How will she heal in these conditions? How will she and Tina be able to accept a child of rape? Right now, physically and emotionally, I think Bette needs to terminate this pregnancy.
