A New World Order – (Chapter: Another human being….right?)
As we walk into police headquarters (later than expected due to traffic), I can’t help but notice how dull and lifeless it feels in here. Every window we pass has its blinds down, easily blocking out most of the sunlight. We make our way through a maze of meeting rooms, locker rooms, a dispatch center, and a lunch hall before finding the main area where John’s detectives work and where his office is located.
The smell of stale coffee and cigarettes lingers in the air, which is not as bad as the burning smell of excessive cologne and perfume that encompasses our building. It’s pretty quiet in here; there are not a lot people around. Everyone must be out having their lunch break, as should we. At that moment, I feel my stomach start to growl.
"How about we go down to that drive-in diner I was telling you about. You know, the one with that incredible grilled salmon." Sean explains while knocking on the chief’s door.
"Sounds good." I reply. The door soon opens and reveals John Anderson, chief of police. The frown lines on his forehead accentuate when he sees us. He is a man with a big build, although packing a little more fat than muscle.
"Well if it isn’t the Federal Bureau of Intimidation." John states smugly.
"I’m sensing some resentment. What about you?" Sean glances at me.
"A bit. I kind of like it though." I smirk while watching the smugness disappear from the chief’s face.
"What do you want?" He asks impatiently.
"We need the evidence you have from the attack on the North Precinct and whatever you collected from this morning’s bombing," said Sean in all seriousness.
"You can’t take this case from me." John growls out. "Those were my officers Miller. We need this."
"We’ll do our best to find out who did this but it’s out of your hands now." Sean placates, trying to reconcile the agitated man. John’s frown only deepens. He takes a threatening step towards Sean. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice we’ve attracted the attention of the few people who stayed behind to work.
"So, you’re going to steal another one of my cases. Is that right?"
"I’m going to solve another one of your cases, John. You want justice for your dead officers then let me handle this." Sean unflinchingly stares into John’s fierce gaze.
