Vivian walks back to a stunned looking Sophie and they board the bus. A couple minutes pass in silence as Sophie tries to wrap her head around what she just saw and Vivian tries to figure out how Sophie is going to react. Finally Sophie speaks…sort of.

“So that was your…I mean she’s the girl who…And you two are like…Okay can you tell me what that was because clearly I’m confused. Wasn’t that the girl you brought to the party?”

    “Yeah that’s my girlfriend, Aster.”

    “Your girlfriend? Well that’s…huh.”

“I know it’s surprising and not what you expected but…”

“Don’t. Can we just leave it for now? I have to think about some things.”

“Yeah that’s fine.” Vivian said even though it wasn’t. What was there to think about? All Vivian was thinking was that she wanted to talk to Aster. Sophie moved her seat and Vivian decided she would close her eyes and try to get some sleep. She tried not to think about Sophie two seats in front of her. Instead she thought of Aster and the feel of their lips touching. Eventually she drifted off.

When they arrived home Sophie wouldn’t even look at Vivian never mind talk to her. Vivian had to call Aster.

“Hey baby. What happened?” Aster asked.

“Sophie saw us and I told her you’re my girlfriend.”

“That’s great. So how did she react?”

“Not great. She said she had to think about some things and she hasn’t said anything yet.”

“That’s not necessarily bad. It just takes some getting used to.”

“What if she decides she doesn’t want to be my friend anymore?” Vivian asked truly scared of the idea that Sophie wouldn’t talk to her anymore.

“Then she’s not worth it,” was Aster’s simple answer.

“You don’t get it. She’s been my friend since I was little. I don’t want to lose her. This is hard for me, Aster.”

“And what coming out was easy for me?”

“No…well yeah it kind of was. I’m not like you. I could lose people I care about.”

“So I had no one to lose because they had already left me like my parents didn’t even care or notice. Why don’t you go be with Sophie then because maybe she just might care about you instead of being with me when you know I care about you. I guess I’m just not worth it like she is.”
