Alteration – (Chapter: (8) Reality Part 2)
“That man is crazy as all hell, but he’s a brilliant surgeon. He’s the one who worked on your father”
The hot nurse says. Brilliant surgeon or not, I would never let that man near me with anything remotely sharp.
The nurse changed Raife’s IV and gave him these pain killers that would also put him to sleep. Oh goody, more drugs. After she left I turned to Spencer and gave her my car keys, asking her to go get the car and pull it up around the back.
“Why can’t we just go through the front?”
“Babe, the Raife Davies was just in an intoxicated car accident. The pap is bound to be swarming”
She was blushing at me calling her babe. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her blush. She’s always been the flirty one so it’s normally the other way around.
“Oh, right”
She stood and left, after kissing my forehead. Once the door had closed, I turned back toward Raife to talk a bit more but he was already knocked out. I watched him for a bit as I thought over his words. I couldn’t tell if they were genuine or just his way of trying to get out of rehab.
Eventually Spence called my phone informing me that she was out back but the reporters were all over her. I guess they’ve made the connection, their getting better at that, damn. I walk out of the room to see two hospital security guards in front of the door.
“We’ll escort you out Miss Davies”
Heh heh heh, sweet!
“Cool, my ride’s actually waiting out back”
They nod and lead the way.
When I’m at the door and about to exit, it being glass and totally translucent, the swarm of reporters come my way and I feel my phone vibrate. I took it out and, seeing that it was Spencer, answered it.
“Promise me that you won’t freak?”
I had told her of my previous…run-ins with the media, she wasn’t all too impressed.
“Spence, I’m not like that anymore, you know that, right?”
“I know that but I still want a promise, please?”
Damn ‘please’. She’s pouting and everything. I can just sense it.
“I promise”
I snap my phone shut and tell the guards I’m ready to go. As I walked, I saw Spence shift to the passenger seat of my newly black, yellow pinstriped mustang. She turned and smiled at me as I made my way through the throng of reporters. I didn’t hear not one question as long as I kept my eyes on hers. And doing that was no problem. No problem at all.
Plopping down in the driver’s seat, I buckled up, said thanks to the security and hesitantly grabbed Spencer’s hand before speeding off toward my house.
”Your place?”
“My place.”
