    As The Sun Shines Through

He took another step towards the seat – towards his death.

I realized that I would have to kill the witnesses in the classroom. Of course, I would save Edward Masen for last. Wasn’t that what I had learned in my human life? One was supposed to save the best for last. And then…

…I remembered that I was human once.

    The monster within me roared.

I tried to visualize how it would have been if I was in his shoes, and he in mine. It didn’t work; all I could think of was the luscious liquid pouring down my throat…

Edward Masen was settled in his seat now, and eyeing me curiously. I was sure my eyes had turned black; I wanted his blood so badly. The fear in his expression slowed my plan for his death for only a moment. The blood was right next to me, waiting for me to take it.

    I hesitated.

I could already see the ambulances and the police cars that would come. I could see Carlisle and Esme’s disappointed faces. Carlisle and Esme…

Closing my eyes and leaning away from Edward Masen, I thought of my “parents.” Carlisle would be disappointed in me, and Esme’s heart would break for the humans.

Why did he have to come to me? I was proud that I was able to abstain from human blood. But now…

I held my breath and clutched the hem of my polo. If I could see where my hands were, I would be able to prevent them from wandering towards his throat.

Someone opened the door to the classroom, distracting Edward Masen from my hateful glares. Although I could no longer inhale the amazing scent, I could still remember it. It would forever be burned into my memory.

Mr. Banner was calling my attention; I suppressed a growl. Fighting the monster within me required my entire self-control. Distracting me for petty facts that I already knew was not a safe idea. I opened my eyes and glared at the teacher. He was taken aback by my harsh gaze.

“Bella, we need to leave for the dentist,” Emmett informed me from the front of the classroom. He quickly walked over to me and picked up my books.
