As The Sun Shines Through
My brothers began chuckling loudly, too.
A large grin would not fall off my face until I noticed that an entire table of students was staring at us.
“Hush, we’re drawing attention,” I said quickly.
Instantly, my siblings quieted down as Emmett got up to leave, mumbling something about my truck. They waited for my hearing to pick up what the students were saying.
“Who are they?” I heard an unfamiliar, male voice ask. I quickly scanned the ‘popular’ table for its owner. When I spotted him, I was slightly stunned. Even for a human, Edward Masen had the handsome features of a vampire. Actually, I would not have guessed he was human had it not been for his striking green eyes. I averted my gaze to the windows as his neighbor, Mike Newton, stared at me.
“That’s Rosalie and Jasper Hale, and Bella and Alice Cullen. The one who left was Emmett Cullen; they all live together with Dr. Cullen and his wife,” Mike said in what was supposed to be a whisper.
“They are…very nice-looking,” the unfamiliar voice said.
“Yeah. They’re all together though – Emmett and Rosalie, and Jasper and Alice, I mean. And they live together,” Mike said, his voice sounding disapproving.
“Mike’s dishing on us,” I said quickly as I tore off the label of my lemonade. My siblings raised their eyebrows and tilted their heads to listen better.
“Which ones are the Cullens?” He asked. “They don’t look related….”
“They’re not. Dr. Cullen is really young and they’re all adopted. The Hales are twins – the blondes – and they’re foster children.”
“They look a little old for foster children.”
At this remark, I grinned at Rosalie and Jasper. Indeed, they were quite old to be foster children.
“They are now, Jasper and Rosalie are both eighteen, but they’ve been with Mrs. Cullen since they were eight. I think she’s their aunt.”
“That’s cool. Have they always lived in Forks?” He asked.
“Nah, they just moved down two years ago from somewhere in Alaska.”
A brief silence followed, and I supposed their conversation was over. I glanced back to their table. To my relief, Mike was no longer staring at me and was staring at Jessica Stanley. I glanced at his handsome neighbor only to find that he was looking at me, too. He quickly looked away before I did.
